Essay development in SPM Bahasa Melayu

You have ideas for the karangan, but the paragraphs stay short and the essay feels thin.

These pages help you grow a thin karangan into paragraphs that explain, exemplify and conclude. The four lessons cover the paragraph body first, then the opening, the links and the ending.

The section sits inside the SPM Bahasa Melayu guide. If your problem is reading the question correctly, start with essay task interpretation first.

What does a developed paragraph look like?

Here is an original paragraph on the topic of saving money, written in four parts.

The four parts are visible: isi (tabiat menabung membantu), huraian (belajar membezakan keperluan daripada kehendak), contoh (murid menyimpan RM5 seminggu) and kesan (yakin mengurus perbelanjaan). If you remove the contoh, the paragraph still says something but sounds like a slogan.

How are the lessons organised?

Each lesson handles one part of the essay.

The original practice set mixes the four with explained answers.

Who should start where?

If your paragraphs are short, go to the first lesson. If you open with the same lines every time, read the introduction lesson. If your essay reads as separate blocks, choose the penanda wacana lesson. If your endings repeat the opening, read the conclusion lesson.

A teacher can work from your own karangan. See online one-to-one SPM Bahasa Melayu tuition if you want that, and try the BM essay plan builder for a free way to plan paragraphs.

Common questions

What does a developed paragraph contain?

A developed paragraph states a point (isi), explains it (huraian), gives a specific example (contoh), and shows the consequence (kesan). The four parts work together. If one is missing, the paragraph feels short or repeats itself.

Where should I start in this section?

Start with building isi, huraian, contoh and kesan, since it fixes thin paragraphs. Then write your opening, link paragraphs with penanda wacana, and finish with a conclusion that follows the argument.

Are the examples model answers to memorise?

No. They are original samples to show a pattern. Memorising a whole essay rarely works because the question changes. The lessons teach you to build a paragraph from the question in front of you.

If you know what to write about but the paragraphs do not grow, a one-to-one BM teacher can read your karangan with you and show which part of the paragraph is missing.
