Developing a relevant KBAT response from the text

The question asks for your view, and your answer drifts away from the passage.

A KBAT response goes beyond finding information. It judges, evaluates or proposes something, and it stays tied to the passage. A four-part frame keeps the answer relevant: claim, text evidence, reason and your own extension.

This lesson belongs to general comprehension. If comparison questions still trouble you, read comparing information across two sources first.

What is the four-part frame?

Each KBAT answer has four parts in order.

  1. Claim: your direct answer to the question.
  2. Text evidence: a detail or phrase from the passage.
  3. Reason: why that detail supports your claim.
  4. Extension: a short addition from your own thinking, linked to the same idea.

The extension comes last, so the passage carries the main weight and your own view adds to it.

Worked example: an invented passage

Here is an original passage.

Sebuah sekolah menganjurkan hari tanpa telefon setiap Rabu. Pada awalnya, ramai murid merungut. Namun, selepas sebulan, guru mendapati murid lebih aktif berbual dan bermain di padang semasa waktu rehat.

The question: Pada pendapat anda, adakah hari tanpa telefon wajar diteruskan? Berikan alasan anda.

Part Answer
Claim Hari tanpa telefon wajar diteruskan.

Joined into a paragraph:

Hari tanpa telefon wajar diteruskan kerana selepas sebulan, murid lebih aktif berbual dan bermain di padang. Perubahan itu menunjukkan murid mula berinteraksi secara langsung dan bergerak cergas. Selain itu, amalan ini boleh mengurangkan kebergantungan pada telefon di rumah.

The answer states a view, uses the passage and then extends the idea.

The mistake: opinion without evidence

A weaker answer reads: Hari tanpa telefon wajar diteruskan kerana telefon tidak baik untuk murid. The claim is reasonable, but nothing from the passage appears, and the reason is a general statement.

The fix is to ask which detail in the passage shows this? before writing the reason. If you cannot find one, reread the passage. The detail often sits in the last two sentences, where the passage reports a result.

Using a counter-view

If the question asks you to evaluate, one sentence on the opposite view can help: Memang ada murid yang merungut pada mulanya, tetapi sikap mereka berubah selepas sebulan. The passage itself shows the concern and its answer.

Use the BM essay plan builder to lay out the four parts before you write.

Check yourself

Using the passage above, answer: Apakah nilai yang dapat dipelajari daripada hari tanpa telefon? Use the four-part frame.

Answer

The answer names a value, cites a detail, gives a reason and ends with a short extension.

Common questions

What is a KBAT question?

KBAT stands for kemahiran berfikir aras tinggi, or higher-order thinking skills. These questions ask you to judge, evaluate or propose something, instead of only finding information in the passage.

Can I give my own opinion?

Yes, when the question asks for it, but tie it to the passage. An opinion with no evidence from the text is weak, because the marker cannot see where it comes from.

How much of the passage should I quote?

Quote a short phrase or refer to a detail, then explain it. Long quotations take space without showing your thinking.

What if I disagree with the writer?

You may, if you give a reason connected to the passage. Explain which detail you are responding to and why you see it differently.

If KBAT questions tempt you to write your own opinion and forget the passage, a one-to-one teacher can mark your answer for where the evidence disappears.
