Ideas and paragraphs are different things. An idea becomes a paragraph when you explain it, prove it with a specific example, and say what follows from it. You can practise that on your own.
This page belongs to the SPM Bahasa Melayu guide. The full lesson is building isi, huraian, contoh and kesan coherently.
What does the student usually say?
“Saya ada idea, tetapi bila menulis, satu perenggan cuma dua baris.” Or: “Cikgu kata isi saya betul, tetapi tiada huraian.”
One point grown into a paragraph
The task, invented for this page: Jelaskan kesan pembaziran makanan. The student writes one line.
The thin paragraph: Pembaziran makanan menyebabkan banyak masalah. Oleh itu, kita perlu mengelakkannya.
The line names a problem and stops. Nothing explains it, nothing shows it happening, and “banyak masalah” does not say which.
The same point in four steps:
| Step | What it does | Sentence |
|---|---|---|
| Isi | States the main point | Pembaziran makanan meningkatkan kos hidup sesebuah keluarga. |
| Huraian | Explains how the point works | Makanan yang dibuang bermakna wang yang dibelanjakan tidak memberikan sebarang manfaat, sedangkan keluarga masih perlu membeli bahan baharu. |
| Contoh | Makes it concrete | Sebagai contoh, sebuah keluarga yang membuang lauk bernilai RM10 setiap hari membazirkan RM300 dalam sebulan. |
| Kesan | Says what follows | Akibatnya, wang yang sepatutnya ditabung terpaksa digunakan untuk perbelanjaan dapur. |
The arithmetic is checkable: RM10 multiplied by 30 days gives RM300. A specific figure gives the marker evidence that the student thought about the point.
Which step is usually missing?
Read a thin paragraph and ask four questions.
- Is there a clear isi in one sentence?
- Does the next sentence explain how the isi works, using “kerana” or “iaitu”?
- Is there one real, specific contoh?
- Does the last sentence state a kesan with “akibatnya” or “oleh itu”?
Most thin paragraphs stop after the first question. The missing step is the second, huraian, which is also the hardest.
What can I do myself?
- Take one isi from any past essay and write the four steps on paper, one sentence each.
- Put the isi, huraian, contoh and kesan in different colours. A paragraph with a missing colour is thin.
- Use the BM essay plan builder to plan two paragraphs in the four-step shape before writing them in full.
- Make sure the paragraph answers the question. Identifying kehendak soalan before writing covers that check.
When might one-to-one tuition help?
If your paragraphs stay thin even after you know the four steps, the gap may be in vocabulary, in idea generation or in sentence control. A teacher who reads your paragraph aloud with you can tell which one it is.
The one-hour trial class (from RM50) suits this well if you bring two of your own thin paragraphs. Learn more at online one-to-one SPM Bahasa Melayu tuition.
