Business answers that repeat one point

Your answer is long, but the marker says you made one point only.

You write a full page, and the comment says “one point, repeated”. The length came from rewording, not from new ideas.

This page helps students whose Business answers look long but score low. The example is a fictional cafe.

What does this look like?

The question asks how a new competitor might affect Kopi Sudut. You write a paragraph. Each sentence says, in different words, that sales will go down.

The marker gives credit for one point. The remaining sentences earned nothing because they added no new idea.

An example of the difference

Repeated. “A competitor will reduce sales. Customers will buy from the competitor, so sales will fall. The cafe will lose income because of the competitor.”

Different jobs. “The new chain is an external factor, because the owner cannot control it. It sells drinks for RM2 less, so price-sensitive customers may switch, which could reduce sales. The cafe could respond with a loyalty card for regular customers, which would cost little and keep them.”

The second answer has a point, a case detail with an effect, and a response.

Give each sentence a job

Sentence job What it does Example
Point Names the idea The chain is an external factor
Case detail Uses the facts It sells drinks RM2 cheaper
Effect Says what happens Customers may switch, reducing sales
Response Suggests what to do A loyalty card

Plan the jobs first, in note form. Then write one sentence per job.

Things you can do alone

Take an old answer and label each sentence with its job. Cross out any sentence that repeats a job with the same content.

Then ask what new thing you could say instead. Usually it is a second effect, such as on staff, cost or cash, or a response. The case-answer planner lays out these jobs for you.

A related habit is covered in when a business answer repeats the question.

When might one-to-one tuition help?

If you cannot think of the second and third ideas, the gap may be in the topic rather than in writing. A teacher can ask you questions to draw out more effects and show how the functions connect.

That is one use of online one-to-one Business tuition, which starts with the one-hour trial class (from RM50), a real taught lesson. Try the sentence-job method first, and see if the comment changes.

Common questions

Why do I repeat myself?

Students repeat when they run out of new points but want to fill the space. The fix is to give each sentence a different job instead of adding more of the same.

How many points does an explain question need?

Usually a point, a reason from the case and an effect. Extra marks for extra points need a genuinely different idea, not the same idea reworded.

Is a longer answer better?

Not by itself. A short answer with three different moves can score more than a long one that repeats. Stop when the question has been answered.

How can I check my own answer?

Highlight each sentence and write its job beside it. If two sentences have the same job and the same content, delete one.

If your answers still circle one idea after planning by sentence job, a one-to-one teacher can mark each sentence with you and show which ones add nothing.
