Form 5 Economics: pulling topics together

You are in your final school year and need to pull the Economics topics together.

The later topics of Economics apply the early ideas to whole economies: what governments do, how an economy is measured and how countries trade. This page gives a suggested order and a way to revise the topics together.

The order is a study order for this site. Confirm the topics for your year with your school and the documents at bpk.moe.gov.my.

What is a sensible order for the later topics?

Step Topic What to be able to do
1 Government and the economy Separate objectives from instruments, trace a policy in a stated model
2 Economic indicators Read growth, inflation and unemployment figures carefully
3 Globalisation and international trade Explain reasons for trade, read exchange rates and payments information

If your school teaches the topics in a different order, follow your school. The study skills carry across.

Take an original fictional island where the price of imported fuel rises. In the trade topic, a dearer import raises costs for local bus companies, which shifts their supply left.

In the indicators topic, higher transport costs can push measured prices up, so a price index rises. In the government topic, a planner must decide whether to respond and must state the assumption behind any response.

The example is one thread through three topics. Tracing a single change like this turns separate chapters into one set of connected explanations.

How should you revise in Form 5?

  1. List topics where your written explanations lost marks.
  2. Repair any early idea that keeps failing, such as a shift versus a movement.
  3. Practise one topic set under time each week.
  4. Keep a mistake log and review it before the next set.

The timed original practice session builder helps with step 3, and the exam guide explains the command words.

Who should start where?

A student with solid early topics starts at government and the economy. A student who lost marks on diagrams in Form 4 goes back to the Form 4 route for two or three sessions first, then returns.

When does one-to-one help?

A teacher can read your written chains for each topic and show where the marks went, which a free page cannot do. See online one-to-one Economics tuition if that would help.

Common questions

Where should a Form 5 student start?

Find the topics where explanations lose marks, not the ones that feel easy. If the early ideas are shaky, return to scarcity and demand and supply first, since later topics reuse them. Confirm your school's order with your teacher.

How do I revise across topics?

Pick one change, such as a rise in costs, and trace it through each topic: price in a market, cost in a firm, trade and exchange rate. Connecting topics builds the chain-writing habit the exam rewards.

Should I do past-year style questions?

Timed practice is useful. This site offers original practice sets, not past papers. Check the current format at lp.moe.gov.my and bpk.moe.gov.my, then use timed sets to practise within it.

What if my earlier topics are weak?

Repair them first. A shaky demand and supply diagram makes the trade and policy topics harder, and one or two focused sessions on it can help the later chapters.

If Form 5 feels like a pile of separate topics, one-to-one Economics lessons let a teacher link them for you and mark your written answers against the question, so the gaps show early.

  • Online one-to-one lessons for your child with an experienced teacher.
  • Your first class is a one-hour trial, from RM50. The fee is agreed before you book.
  • Happy with the teacher? Continue with lessons of about 1.5 hours. If not, ask for another teacher.
