SPM English revision route and topic checklist

You are revising English, yet you cannot say which skills are solid and which are not.

This checklist turns SPM English revision into a list of skills you can test. Copy it, tick an item only when you have passed its self-test, and use the tools linked at the end to plan your weeks.

It sits inside the SPM English guide. For the current paper structure, check the Lembaga Peperiksaan website.

How do I read the checklist?

Each row names a skill, gives a self-test, and leaves space for a status: solid, unsteady or not started. A skill is solid only if you pass the self-test on a new example, not one you have seen.

Skill area Self-test Status
Reading: purpose, audience, main message State the purpose of a short notice in one sentence
Reading: context vocabulary Infer one unknown word using two clues
Reading: paraphrase Match a question stem to its paraphrase in the text
Reading: distractors Give the evidence that rules out two wrong options
Short messages Answer every point of an email task in order
Short messages Choose a greeting and ending to suit the reader
Guided and extended writing Plan a response and check it against the task
Grammar Correct five sentences and name each error
Vocabulary Replace three vague words with precise ones
Speaking Answer a personal question with a reason, aloud
Listening Note the key facts from a short recording

What order should I revise in?

Work in three passes.

  1. Foundations. Grammar repair and vocabulary in context. Errors here show up in every paper.
  2. Skills in tasks. Reading short texts, short messages and speaking. Practise each as a separate skill.
  3. Full tasks. Timed writing and complete reading passages, using your checklist to decide which skill to repair next.

Move to the next pass only when most items in the current one are solid. If you return to an earlier pass, it only means a foundation needs another look.

Where do I find each skill?

Turning the checklist into a plan

List your unsteady items, choose two for the coming week and give each a short daily slot. The realistic revision planner helps you fit this around school. The spaced recall planner schedules retests, and the skill evidence tracker stores what you have tested.

If you would like a teacher to choose your starting skill and check your work on it, see online one-to-one English tuition.

Common questions

How do I use this checklist?

Copy it into a notebook. For each item, do the self-test, then mark it solid, unsteady or not started. Revise unsteady and not started items first, and return to solid ones later to check they still hold.

Does this list the exact SPM paper format?

No. It follows skills taught on this site. Check the current paper structure and specification on the Lembaga Peperiksaan website or with your teacher, because formats can be updated.

How often should I retest items?

A weekly review works well. Retest one or two solid items each week so earlier work is not forgotten while you study new items.

If the checklist shows skills you cannot test yourself on, one-to-one English lessons let a teacher choose where to begin and check your writing or speaking as you practise.

  • Online one-to-one lessons for your child with an experienced teacher.
  • Your first class is a one-hour trial, from RM50. The fee is agreed before you book.
  • Happy with the teacher? Continue with lessons of about 1.5 hours. If not, ask for another teacher.
