Home Science mixed practice with explanations

You have read the lessons and want to see if the skills hold on fresh questions.

These seven original questions mix the skills from the Home Science lessons. Try each one on paper first, then open the answer and compare your method, not only your final figure.

This page is part of the SPM subjects and learning resources section. Practical work stays with your school.

Questions

Q1. A 1 kg bag of flour costs RM4.50 and a 2.5 kg bag costs RM10.00. Find the price per kilogram of each bag.

Answer

1 kg bag: RM4.50 per kg. 2.5 kg bag: RM10.00 ÷ 2.5 = RM4.00 per kg.

The larger bag is RM0.50 cheaper per kilogram.

Q2. A family makes 12 cupcakes from one recipe. They need 40 cupcakes for a school sale. How many recipes must they make, and why?

Answer

40 ÷ 12 = 3.33. Three recipes make only 36 cupcakes, which is 4 short, so they must make 4 recipes. That gives 48 cupcakes, with 8 spare.

Q3. A household has RM120 for groceries this week and has already spent RM47.80. How much is left, and is it enough for a RM35.50 fish purchase and a RM18.90 vegetable purchase?

Answer

Left: RM120.00 − RM47.80 = RM72.20. The two purchases cost RM35.50 + RM18.90 = RM54.40. Since RM54.40 is less than RM72.20, it is enough, with RM72.20 − RM54.40 = RM17.80 remaining.

Q4. Explain why raw vegetables should be washed before they are cut.

Answer

Model answer: “Raw vegetables should be washed first, because soil and germs on the surface can move onto the knife and board during cutting. The cut surface then carries them into the food, so washing before cutting removes most of them before they spread.”

Q5. A student writes “Keep the fridge cold” as a step for storing milk. Rewrite it as an explained step.

Answer

“Milk should be kept in a cold refrigerator, because bacteria multiply more slowly at low temperatures, so the milk stays fresh for longer.”

Q6. Two options for a school bag.

Bag A costs RM45 and lasts about 2 years. Bag B costs RM28 and lasts about 1 year. Which is better value for a 2-year period? Justify your choice.

Answer

Bag A: RM45 for 2 years, RM22.50 a year. Bag B: two bags over 2 years cost 2 × RM28 = RM56, which is RM28 a year.

Choose Bag A. It costs RM11 less over two years. The condition is that the lifespan claim holds; if Bag A tore in its first year, Bag B could be the better value.

Q7. Rewrite this reflection to make it specific: “I learned a lot about budgeting and will do better next time.” Invent two details.

Answer

Your details will differ. A strong version: “I planned a RM60 menu but the fish cost RM8 more than I had listed, so I swapped it for eggs and stayed within RM60. Next time I will check prices on the day before writing the final budget.”

It names a cost, a cause and a change.

Common questions

Are these real SPM past-paper questions?

No. Every question here is original and written for practice. The skills match the lessons on this site, and you should check the current paper format with your school.

Should I time myself?

Try the first attempt without a timer so you can think through the reasoning. Then repeat the questions you missed with a timer to build speed.

What if my answer is different from the one shown?

Check the method first. If your steps are sound and only the wording differs, your answer may still earn the marks. If a figure differs, find the step where the numbers diverged.

How many times should I redo a question?

Redo a missed question after a few days without looking at the answer. Stop repeating it once you can explain each step aloud.

If some answers here felt shaky, a one-to-one Home Science teacher can go through your working and help you rebuild the steps that slipped.
