How to answer Sejarah questions

You studied the notes, yet your Sejarah answers still feel thin when the question is worded differently.

Good Sejarah answers come from reading the question, not from writing everything you remember. This hub gathers five lessons on answering, plus a practice set.

It belongs to the SPM Sejarah guide, which covers the content chapters. Here the focus is how to write an answer from that content.

What does the cluster cover?

Each lesson handles one step from question to finished answer.

How do the skills connect?

The command word decides what kind of answer is needed. Development and evidence then make that answer strong, and the chronology gives it a clear order.

The checklist lesson closes the loop, because it turns the first four skills into questions you ask about a finished draft.

One example: same fact, three commands

Take the fact “the Malayan Union was replaced in 1948 after Malay opposition.” 1 Under state, you write it as one line. Under explain, you add why the Malays opposed it, for example the reduced powers of the rulers and easy citizenship 2, and what followed.

Under compare, you set the Malayan Union beside the Federation of Malaya Agreement that replaced it, and name a similarity and a difference. For instance, the Federation restored the rulers’ position and tightened citizenship 3. The fact is the same, but the answer changes shape each time.

Where should you start?

If your marks drop on “explain” and “compare” questions, begin with the command-word lesson. If your answers are correct but short, start with development. Students who write long essays without a clear argument should start with the checklist.

When you finish, try the practice set and use the evidence-to-explanation planner on your own answers. For teacher support, see online one-to-one Sejarah tuition.

Common questions

Why are my Sejarah answers marked low when I remember the facts?

Recall alone answers a different question from the one asked. Marks go to facts that are selected for the command word, explained with a reason, and supported by evidence. These lessons train those three steps.

Do I need to memorise every date?

Dates matter less than order and cause. Knowing which event came first and why the next one followed lets you write a convincing answer. Check exact dates in your textbook for the points that need them.

Which lesson should I start with?

Start with command words, since every other skill depends on knowing what the question wants. Then move to developing explanations and using evidence, and finish with the chronology and essay review lessons.

If you know the facts but your answers lose marks for being short or off-question, a one-to-one Sejarah teacher can read your written answers with you and show where development or evidence is missing.
