Units and significant figure checker

You keep losing marks to a wrong unit or a rounding slip after doing the hard part right.

This tool converts a set of curriculum units, counts significant figures, and checks whether rounding at the wrong stage changes a final answer. It is for students who do the method correctly and still lose marks on units and rounding.

Everything you enter stays on this device.

Who is this tool for?

It helps Form 4 and Form 5 students in Mathematics, Science, Physics and Additional Mathematics, plus Geography students converting map measurements. It also helps anyone who rounds in the middle of a calculation out of habit, which can change the final answer.

How do I use it?

  1. Choose what you want to do: convert units, count and round significant figures, or check when to round.
  2. Enter your numbers, and choose units if you are converting.
  3. Press Check.
  4. Read the result and the working underneath it.
  5. Change one value and compare, for example a different number of significant figures.

How does it work?

Conversion multiplies by one factor between the two units. For area the length factor is squared and for volume it is cubed, and the working shows this. Speed converts with both a distance and a time factor, so km/h to m/s multiplies by 1000 ÷ 3600.

For significant figures, non-zero digits and zeros between them count. Leading zeros never count, and trailing zeros after a decimal point do. Rounding looks at the next digit, rounding up for 5 or more.

A short worked example

This is a worked example. The number 0.004500 has 4 significant figures, because the 3 leading zeros do not count and the 2 trailing zeros follow a decimal point. Rounded to 2 significant figures it is 0.0045.

For rounding stages, take 7.4 × 1.1 × 9.9. Carrying all digits gives 80.586, which rounds to 81. Rounding the middle value 8.14 to 8.1 first gives 80.19, which rounds to 80. The tool flags that difference.

What are the limits?

The tool uses a fixed list of curriculum units for length, area, volume, mass, time and speed. It rejects a conversion between different kinds of quantity.

Trailing zeros in a whole number are treated as not significant. It does not know what rounding or unit tolerance any mark scheme allows, so follow the instruction in each question.

Where does this help in your subjects?

Read mathematics mistakes caused by units and rounding for the wider pattern. Then see reading measurements and reporting units in Science.

For consistent units in context, use solving circular measure applications with consistent units and checking units when converting map measurements. For a teacher to build the checking habit with you, see SPM Mathematics tuition and the one-hour trial class (from RM50).

Common questions

Why is 2 cm² not 0.02 m²?

An area unit squares the length factor. Since 1 cm = 0.01 m, 1 cm² = 0.01 × 0.01 m² = 0.0001 m². So 2 cm² is 0.0002 m². Using the plain length factor for an area is a common conversion error.

Why does the tool refuse to convert km to kg?

Length and mass are different kinds of quantity, so no factor connects them. The tool rejects the pair and tells you why, instead of producing a number that would look plausible but mean nothing.

How many significant figures does 1500 have?

It is ambiguous without more information. This tool treats the trailing zeros as not significant, so it counts 2. Writing 1.50 × 10^3 shows 3 and 1.5 × 10^3 shows 2, which removes the doubt.

Does the tool tell me what my mark scheme accepts?

No. Each paper and question sets its own rounding instruction. Follow what the question says, and use this tool to practise the method, not to predict marks.

If units and rounding are the last thing you check and the first thing you lose marks on, a one-to-one lesson can turn the check into a fixed habit in your subject.

  • Online one-to-one lessons for your child with an experienced teacher.
  • Your first class is a one-hour trial, from RM50. The fee is agreed before you book.
  • Happy with the teacher? Continue with lessons of about 1.5 hours. If not, ask for another teacher.
