Our online one-to-one SPM Sinografi tuition gives you an experienced teacher who helps you connect space, visual design and a performance in clear written and spoken explanations. The first class is a one-hour trial class (from RM50).

Who this tuition helps

Scenography students usually have visual ideas. The marks are lost when the ideas float free of the performance.

  • Decoration instead of design. Every element looks attractive, but none can be tied to a scene.
  • Forgetting the audience. The layout ignores where people sit and what they can see.
  • A list instead of a reason. The explanation names colours and props without saying what they do.

One-to-one teaching lets the teacher put your own drawing on the table and ask what each part does for the story.

What a lesson looks like: two layouts, one concept

This is a worked example.

Concept: a fictional play about a village during a flood. The audience should feel the family’s home shrinking.

The student sketches two layouts.

Layout Space Effect on concept
A: full stage, bright even light Open, wide Feels safe, so the flood has no threat
B: a raised platform with blue-grey light and a shrinking floor area Narrow, high Audience watches the dry space disappear

The teacher asks the student to choose and justify. The student picks B and writes: “The raised platform reduces the acting space scene by scene, so the audience feels the water rising without a real flood on stage.”

Then a second question: where does the audience sit? If the platform blocks the side seats, B has a problem, and the student must adjust the angle. The skill is weighing a design against the concept and the audience. See explaining how space and visual design support a performance concept for a free walk-through.

What online lessons can and cannot do

Online lessons suit concept analysis, comparing layouts, reading a design brief, colour and light reasoning, and structuring your written explanation.

The school theatre, workshop materials, lighting equipment and assessed building work are not reachable through a screen. The teacher does not build, test or light your set, and cannot promise a particular grade.

How starting works

In your WhatsApp message, give your form and the performance you are designing for. We assign an experienced teacher and agree the fee with you before the one-hour trial class (from RM50). After the trial you decide whether the teacher is a good fit, and you can ask for another teacher if not.

The trial lesson agenda builder helps you choose which drawing to bring. Read how our online tuition works for the complete process.

Common questions

What does Scenography tuition cover online?

It covers reading a script or concept, choosing a stage layout, explaining colour, levels and materials, and writing the justification. You explain your sketches and plans, and the teacher questions each choice.

Can a teacher help me build a set or model?

Physical set building, model making and any supervised assessed work take place at school. The teacher helps you plan them and explain the decisions behind them.

I find it hard to put design ideas into words. Will this help?

Yes. The lessons use a fixed pattern of what you chose, what it does for the performance and why. You practise it on your own designs until it comes naturally.

How much does it cost after the trial?

The first class is a one-hour trial from RM50. The rate depends on the teacher and is the same hourly rate as that teacher's normal classes, and the fee is agreed before the trial. Lessons are usually about 1.5 hours per class.

Which language are lessons taught in?

Lessons are in English or BM, depending on the subject, and the teacher explains clearly in whichever suits the student. Written work stays in your course language.

If your design drawings work but your explanation does not connect them to the performance, that link is what a one-to-one lesson trains. Tell us your form and the performance you are designing for. Parents usually arrange the trial.
