A speaking component rewards a clear structure more than fancy vocabulary. The plan below gives you a shape to rehearse, so on the day you are choosing words, not inventing a plan.
What should I check officially first?
The format, time allowed and arrangements for speaking assessment depend on the subject and the current rules. Ask your subject teacher, then confirm on the Lembaga Peperiksaan website (lp.moe.gov.my). Plan your rehearsal around what you verify, not what you remember from older students.
What is a simple structure to rehearse?
Use three parts: a direct answer, a reason, and an example. Each part is one or two sentences, so a response stays short enough to control.
- Answer. Say your position in one sentence.
- Reason. Add “because” and one idea.
- Example. Give a specific situation from school or home.
Here is a worked example
The prompt: “Should students carry a phone to school?” A scattered reply: “Phones, well, they are, um, good and also bad, I think, many things.”
A structured reply: “I think students can carry phones if they keep them in their bags during lessons. The reason is that a phone helps in an emergency, such as when a bus is late. For example, last term my friend used hers to tell her mother she needed a different pick-up time.”
The second answer is not more advanced. Each sentence has a job, and the student always knows what comes next.
How do I rehearse without a partner?
Follow this cycle twice a week.
- Pick one prompt and give yourself thirty seconds to plan the three parts on paper.
- Speak for the time the assessment allows, using the speaking rehearsal tool. Its playback stays on your device.
- Listen once and count fillers such as “um” and “like”.
- Repeat the same prompt, aiming to cut the fillers by half.
The same prompt twice matters. It shows whether you improved, without the confusion of a new topic.
What gets marks in most speaking tasks?
Without promising a mark scheme, speaking tasks generally look at relevance, organisation, language accuracy and fluency. Build your self-review around those four words, and ask your teacher for the current criteria.
- Relevance. Did you answer the question asked?
- Organisation. Could a listener follow the order?
- Accuracy. Did tenses and word choices stay consistent?
- Fluency. Did you keep going after a slip?
For a quiet student, rehearsing aloud in private first lowers the stakes. The English writing task checklist also lets you reuse your structure in written work.
Where does tuition help?
Speaking improves fastest with a listener. In English tuition or Bahasa Melayu tuition, a teacher can respond to your answer the way a marker would, then have you try again. A one-hour trial class (from RM50) lets you test this. Read preparing for listening components next, or return to the exam hub.
