Subject teaching interests

You teach more than one subject and need to decide which to name first.

Teachers can introduce themselves for any SPM subject. Name the ones you teach with confidence, strongest first, with the forms and years for each.

How SPM subjects group

Subjects sit in families, and it helps to see where yours fits.

Family Examples
Languages Bahasa Melayu, English, Chinese, Tamil, Arabic
Mathematics Mathematics, Additional Mathematics
Sciences Science, Physics, Chemistry, Biology
Humanities and commerce Sejarah (History), Geography, Economics, Business, Accounting
Religious and moral Pendidikan Islam, Pendidikan Moral, Bible Knowledge
Technical and arts Computer Science, Engineering Drawing and other vocational subjects

Lead with confidence, not range

A reader learns more from three subjects you teach well than from fifteen you have touched. Order them by how confident you are.

A worked example: “Mathematics (Form 4 and 5, nine years), Additional Mathematics (Form 4 and 5, six years). I can also teach Physics at Form 4 level for students who need the mathematics explained.”

The last sentence tells the reader the limit honestly, which helps them place you correctly.

State the forms and the kind of student

Some teachers prefer students who are behind, others enjoy stretching students aiming higher. If you have a preference, say it in one line.

You can also say whether you are happy working with Form 4 students building foundations, or with Form 5 students preparing for the exam. These details help when a student’s need is specific.

Teaching language

List the languages you can explain in. Exam answers stay in the language the student sits the paper in, so note whether you can model answers in that language as well.

Common questions

Can I name more than one subject?

Yes. List each subject you teach comfortably, strongest first, with the forms and years of experience for each. A short, honest list is more useful than a long one.

What if my subject is not a common one?

Name it anyway. Students sit specialist technical, arts and language subjects too, and a teacher experienced in one of them is worth hearing about. State the subject exactly as it appears on the SPM syllabus.

Do I need to teach in English?

State the languages you can teach in. Students ask for English, Bahasa Melayu or Chinese, and a teacher who can explain clearly in the language a student prefers is a good fit.
