Complete a mixed language practice set

You can do each topic alone, but a mixed set makes you switch skills and slip.

A mixed set makes you switch between skills, so it is closer to a real paper than a single-topic drill. Attempt it, mark it, log the errors and retest.

This lesson belongs to practice and revision. Keep your misconception log open while you work.

What are the four steps?

  1. Attempt the set without notes, in one sitting.
  2. Mark your answers against the explained answers.
  3. Log each error with its rule.
  4. Retest the same questions after three days.

Do not stop to check a rule mid-set. A gap that you hide from yourself stays a gap.

Worked example: a five-question mixed set

Try these, then open the answers.

  1. Nominal or verbal? الطالبةُ تقرأُ في المكتبةِ. (The student reads in the library.)
  2. Correct: الأشجارُ عاليون. (The trees are tall.)
  3. In زارتْ منى أختَها. أعطتْها كتابًا, who does ـها refer to? (Mona visited her sister. She gave her a book.)
  4. Question: أين تلعبُ؟ (Where do you play?) Which answer is relevant: ألعبُ كثيرًا or ألعبُ في الحديقةِ?
  5. What does مظلمة probably mean in “كانت الغرفة مظلمة فأشعلنا المصباح”? (The room was ___ so we switched on the lamp.)
Answer
  1. Nominal. The first word الطالبة is a noun, and the verb تقرأ sits inside the predicate.
  2. الأشجارُ عاليةٌ. Trees are things, so the plural takes a feminine singular predicate.
  3. ـها refers to أختها (her sister). Mona is the one giving the book, so ها (her) must be her sister.
  4. ألعبُ في الحديقةِ. The question word أين asks for a place.
  5. Dark. The clue is switching on a lamp.

The mistake that costs marks

Students look up the rule the moment a question feels hard. The score looks better, but the set stops showing where the gaps are.

Approach What the set shows
look up rules mid-set a polished result with hidden gaps
attempt, then mark the true weak areas

The fix is to finish first and check afterwards.

Check yourself

After marking the five questions, you got 2 and 3 wrong. Write what you log and what you study next.

Answer

Log two entries. Entry one: non-human plural takes a feminine singular predicate. Entry two: check who does the verb before choosing what ـها refers to. Then study checking gender and number agreement and resolving pronoun reference, and retest in three days.

What to study next

Keep a record of your results after every set. Continue with preparing learning goals for paid Arabic tuition, or return to the mixed practice page.

Common questions

How should I handle a mixed set?

Attempt it without notes first, then mark it against the answers. Write each error in your misconception log. Do not reread the lessons until you have finished the whole set, so that the set reflects what you really remember.

How long should a mixed set take?

Give yourself about two minutes per question at first, then reduce the time as you improve. The aim of your first attempt is accuracy, not speed. Record how long you took so you can compare later.

What if I score badly?

Treat the result as a map, not a verdict. Count which skill area lost the most questions and start repairs there. A poor first attempt on a mixed set shows where revision will help most.

If mixed sets expose several weak spots at once, a one-to-one Arabic teacher can sort your errors into an order of repair and work through them with you.
