Essay forms and register practice

Essay forms and register: practice with answers

You have read the lessons and want to see whether the choices hold up on new questions.

These questions practise the four skills in essay forms and register. Answer each on paper before you open the explanation.

Questions 1 to 3: register

1. Which sentence suits a formal essay? (a) Mereka tak setuju dengan cadangan tu. (b) Mereka tidak bersetuju dengan cadangan itu.

Answer

(b). It uses tidak, bersetuju and itu, which are the standard forms. Sentence (a) uses the spoken forms tak, setuju and tu. See choosing formal or informal register.

2. Rewrite for a letter to a principal: Cikgu, kami nak minta tambah masa rehat.

Answer

Tuan, kami memohon agar waktu rehat dipanjangkan. The address Tuan suits a formal letter, memohon agar replaces nak minta, and waktu rehat dipanjangkan is a full passive sentence.

3. A task asks you to write a speech to classmates about recycling. Name one feature of register that can be friendlier than an essay, and one that must stay formal.

Answer

A speech can address the audience directly, for example Rakan-rakan sekalian, and can use a rhetorical question. Vocabulary and sentence structure still follow standard Bahasa Melayu, so spoken fillers and slang stay out.

Questions 4 to 5: discussion

4. For the task Bincangkan sama ada pelajar patut bekerja separuh masa, give one point for and one point against.

Answer

For: part-time work teaches responsibility and money management. Against: long hours reduce study time. Each point needs a reason and an example, such as a student who loses sleep before an exam.

5. Write a one-sentence weighing statement that ends a discussion paragraph on question 4.

Answer

Walaupun kerja separuh masa melatih tanggungjawab, manfaat itu hanya bermakna jika jam bekerja tidak mengganggu pelajaran. It names both sides and states the condition that decides between them.

Questions 6 to 7: narrative

6. Reorder into a sequence: the boy thanks the stranger; the boy loses his way; the boy leaves home early; the stranger shows the road.

Answer

Leaves home early, loses his way, the stranger shows the road, the boy thanks the stranger. The turning point is the stranger’s help, and the thanks closes the story.

7. Replace the repeated connector: Kemudian dia berjalan. Kemudian dia terjumpa dompet. Kemudian dia pergi ke balai polis.

Answer

Dia berjalan pulang. Sejurus kemudian, dia terjumpa sebuah dompet. Oleh itu, dia menyerahkannya di balai polis. A time connector and a cause connector replace the repetition.

Question 8: factual

8. Write a point, explanation and example about how a school garden helps students.

Answer

Point: A school garden teaches students about plants. Explanation: Apabila murid menjaga tanaman setiap minggu, mereka memerhati sendiri cara tumbuhan membesar. Example: Sebagai contoh, murid Tingkatan 4 mencatat ketinggian pokok cili setiap Jumaat. The explanation links the activity to the benefit.

Common questions

Should I write my answers before opening the explanation?

Yes. Write a full sentence or a short plan for each question first, then open the answer. Reading the answer first feels like learning, but it does not show you what you can do alone.

What if my answer is correct but worded differently?

Compare the reason, not the exact words. If your reason matches the one in the explanation, your answer is sound. If only the final choice matches, re-read the lesson that covers it.

How often should I repeat a practice set?

Redo the questions you missed after two or three days, using a blank page. Redoing correct answers adds little, so spend the time on the weak ones.

If some of these answers feel shaky, a one-to-one teacher can work through the ones you missed with you, using your own writing instead of a fixed set of questions.
