Essay task interpretation practice

Essay task interpretation: practice with answers

You understand the method and want to test it on questions you have not seen.

These questions practise the four skills in essay task interpretation. Answer on paper before opening each explanation.

Questions 1 to 3: kehendak soalan

1. Name the form, audience, theme and action in: Tulis sebuah surat kepada pengurus taman rekreasi untuk mencadangkan penambahan tong sampah.

Answer

Form: surat rasmi; audience: pengurus taman rekreasi; theme: penambahan tong sampah; action: mencadangkan. The letter proposes and gives reasons for the extra bins.

2. Which action word asks for reasons and which asks for a list of steps: terangkan sebab, nyatakan langkah?

Answer

Terangkan sebab asks for reasons with explanation. Nyatakan langkah asks for steps. Both can appear with the same theme, but the paragraphs are built differently.

3. A student answers the question in 1 with an essay on littering in general. Which signal did they skip?

Answer

They skipped the action and the audience. The task was to propose more bins to a manager, not to discuss littering.

Questions 4 to 5: theme, task and audience

4. Same theme: penggunaan telefon pintar. Write the different audience for (a) ucapan kepada murid, (b) surat kepada ibu bapa.

Answer

(a) Fellow students, in a direct but formal tone. (b) Parents, in a respectful letter that explains concerns and suggests cooperation.

5. Rewrite a theme-only plan into a task-shaped one: Plan: bahaya telefon pintar for Cadangkan cara ibu bapa mengawal penggunaan telefon pintar anak.

Answer

Plan: cara ibu bapa menetapkan waktu skrin, menggunakan kawalan aplikasi dan berbincang dengan anak. The plan now names the party (ibu bapa) and the action (cara mengawal).

Questions 6 to 7: stimulus materials

6. A chart shows 40 students in a club in January and 65 in March. What can the stimulus show, and what must you add?

Answer

It shows growth of 25 students. You add the reason for growth and what the task requires, such as a suggestion for the club’s next step.

7. Write one sentence that uses the figures from question 6 without copying them.

Answer

Pertambahan ahli dalam dua bulan membuktikan kelab ini semakin menarik minat murid. The sentence states what the figure proves.

Question 8: paragraph audit

8. Task: Tulis rencana tentang cara menjaga kesihatan mata.

Paragraph summaries: (1) why eyes matter; (2) rest eyes after reading; (3) history of spectacles; (4) eat foods rich in vitamin A.

Which paragraph drifts?

Answer

Paragraph 3. It is about the theme but does not offer a way to care for eyes. Replace it with another way, such as limiting screen time.

If you got these wrong

Revisit identifying kehendak soalan before writing for questions 1 to 3, separating theme from task and audience for 4 and 5, and planning a response from stimulus materials for 6 and 7. For question 8, see checking whether every paragraph answers the question.

Common questions

Do I need to write full essays for these questions?

No. Most questions ask for a signal, a one-line plan or a repair. The aim is to train how you read, which a short answer shows faster than a full essay.

How should I mark my own answers?

Check the reason first, then the wording. If you found the signal but phrased it differently, that is fine. If you missed the signal, reread the lesson that covers it.

Can I use this as timed practice?

Yes. Give yourself two minutes for each of the first four and five minutes for each of the last four. The timed practice session builder helps you set this up.

If you miss the same kind of question repeatedly, a one-to-one teacher can work on your own plans and show the habit that makes you skip the signal.
