Bahasa Melayu · Essay task interpretation

Checking that every paragraph answers the question

Halfway through your essay, the topic has quietly changed without you noticing.

A paragraph answers the question when its main idea serves the form, audience, theme and action the question asked for. To check this, reduce each paragraph to one line and test that line against the question.

This lesson belongs to essay task interpretation. It assumes you can already identify the kehendak soalan before writing.

How do I audit a paragraph?

Write the question’s key words at the top of your page. Then write one line under each paragraph that says what the paragraph does for the question, not what it is about.

Next to each line, put a tick if it serves the question and a question mark if it serves only the theme. The question marks are the paragraphs to repair.

Worked example: an essay plan that drifts

Here is an original task: Tulis sebuah ucapan kepada rakan sekolah tentang cara menjaga kebersihan kantin.

Key words: ucapan, rakan sekolah, cara, kebersihan kantin.

Paragraph One-line summary Serves the question?
1 Opening greeting and why a clean canteen matters to us Yes
2 Students should put rubbish in the bins after eating Yes, it is a way
3 Pollution in rivers harms the whole country Theme only, no way given
4 Students can take turns to wipe tables Yes, it is a way
5 Closing appeal to classmates Yes

Paragraph 3 is about pollution in general. It is true and well written, but it does not give a way for classmates to keep the canteen clean.

Repairing the drifting paragraph

Do not throw away the idea. Change its job. Keep the link to rubbish, and name an action for the audience.

Sampah yang dibuang merata-rata bukan sahaja mengotorkan kantin, malah menarik lalat yang menjejaskan kesihatan kita. Oleh itu, marilah kita memastikan setiap bungkusan dimasukkan ke dalam tong selepas makan.

The repaired paragraph now names the audience (“kita”) and an action, so it answers the task.

The mistake that hides drift

The common slip is to judge a paragraph by whether it sounds relevant. Words such as “kebersihan” and “alam sekitar” appear, so it feels right.

The fix is to judge by the summary line. Ask: if this were the only paragraph, would the reader learn a way to keep the canteen clean? If not, it drifts. The claim-evidence revision desk gives space to put the question and each summary line side by side.

Check yourself

The task is Tulis sebuah surat kepada pengetua untuk mencadangkan kelab membaca.

A student’s paragraph says: Membaca ialah jambatan ilmu. Sejak dahulu, orang bijak gemar membaca. Buku memberi pengetahuan tentang dunia.

Does it answer the task? How could you repair it?

Answer

It does not. It praises reading in general and never proposes the club or addresses the principal.

A repair: Saya berpendapat kelab membaca dapat menggalakkan murid membaca dengan lebih kerap. Melalui kelab ini, murid boleh berkongsi buku dan berbincang tentang bahan yang dibaca. The paragraph now makes the proposal and names a benefit for the school.

Common questions

Should I delete a paragraph that drifts?

Not always. First ask whether the idea can be rewritten to answer the task. A paragraph about a general problem can be tied back by naming the audience or the action the question asked for.

When should I do the audit?

Do a quick version on the plan before writing, and a full version on the draft if time allows. Checking the plan is faster and prevents the drift from being written at all.

What if every paragraph seems relevant?

Write the one-line summary of each and read the summaries in order. If they do not add up to an answer to the question, the paragraphs are relevant to the theme but not to the task.

Does a drifting paragraph lose marks even if it is well written?

It can. Quality of language helps, but an idea that does not serve the question adds length without adding to the answer, and it uses time you could have spent developing a relevant point.

If your essays start on task and then drift, a one-to-one teacher can audit a draft of yours paragraph by paragraph and show the sentence where it turns away.
