This page explains how to read and answer Bahasa Melayu questions. It does not state the paper structure, time or marks, because those belong to the official documents from Lembaga Peperiksaan (lp.moe.gov.my) and Bahagian Pembangunan Kurikulum (bpk.moe.gov.my).
Check the current format there before you plan your revision. The habits below help whatever the format is.
How do you read what a question wants?
Start with the command word, because it sets the shape of the answer.
| Command | What it asks for |
|---|---|
| Nyatakan | A short statement, no long explanation |
| Terangkan, huraikan, jelaskan | Points with reasons and examples |
| Bincangkan | Both sides weighed, then a judgement |
| Cadangkan | Specific actions with reasons |
| Bandingkan | Similarities and differences, point by point |
After the command word, find the form (surat, ucapan, rencana, laporan), the audience and the theme. The essay task interpretation guide teaches this in detail.
An original question, answered two ways
Here is an original question: Huraikan cara murid boleh menjaga kebersihan kelas.
Answer A begins: Kebersihan ialah sebahagian daripada iman, dan alam sekitar yang kotor memberi kesan kepada negara. It is fluent, but it names no way for students to keep a class clean.
Answer B begins: Murid boleh melantik petugas kebersihan setiap minggu supaya tugas menyapu dan mengelap papan hitam dibahagikan secara adil. It names a party, an action and a reason.
Both use good Malay. Answer B follows the command word huraikan and the phrase cara murid, so it answers the task.
What habits protect marks?
- Underline the command word, form, audience and theme.
- Write a one-line plan that uses all four.
- Keep each paragraph to one point with explanation and an example.
- Check the register: formal Malay, full sentences, no spoken forms.
- Reread the question at the end and check each paragraph against it.
The lesson on checking whether every paragraph answers the question shows the last habit in action.
How should you practise?
Practise short tasks every week and full papers under time. After each attempt, mark your own answer against a list of what the question asked, and log the misses in the mistake log tool.
The timed practice session builder sets up a timed attempt, and the revision guide shows which topics to cover first. If you want a teacher to mark a full answer with you, see online one-to-one SPM Bahasa Melayu tuition.
