These seven situations are original and ramp from a simple opener to a reasoned disagreement. Say each reply aloud first, then read the model and the reason.
The lessons for this skill set are in group speaking. The timed original practice session builder can set a timer for each turn.
Situations 1 to 3: entering and building
Situation 1. The group is silent after the teacher gives the topic, “Bagaimana sekolah boleh mengurangkan sampah plastik?” Start the discussion.
Answer
Model: Boleh saya mulakan dengan satu cadangan? Sekolah boleh menggalakkan murid membawa botol air sendiri kerana cara itu mengurangkan penggunaan botol plastik.
Why it works: an opener that offers a starting point, a clear suggestion, and a reason with “kerana”.
Situation 2. Izzah has just said that recycling bins should be placed near the canteen. Enter politely and add a point.
Answer
Model: Izinkan saya menyumbang pendapat. Saya ingin menambah bahawa tong kitar semula perlu diletakkan berhampiran tangga juga supaya murid yang lalu di situ turut menggunakannya.
Why it works: a polite opener, a link with “menambah”, and a reason with “supaya”.
Situation 3. Ravi says that clubs should meet after school. You agree but have a new detail: some students take the bus at 1.30 p.m. Build on his point.
Answer
Why it works: it names Ravi, adds a specific detail, and proposes a workable solution with “oleh itu”.
Situations 4 to 5: disagreeing with reasons
Situation 4. Dina says that the school should remove all tests because they cause stress. You think some testing helps learning. Disagree respectfully.
Answer
Model: Saya faham pandangan Dina tadi, namun saya kurang bersetuju kerana ujian yang dirancang dengan baik membantu murid mengetahui topik yang masih lemah. Bagaimana pula pandangan yang lain?
Why it works: it acknowledges Dina, turns with “namun”, gives a reason, and invites others. It does not call her view wrong.
Situation 5. Amir says that a school trip should be held every term. You agree that trips help, but cost is a problem for some families. Show partial agreement.
Answer
Why it works: the first half accepts his point, the second half marks a limit with a reason, and the last sentence offers an alternative.
Situations 6 to 7: sharing the floor
Situation 6. You have spoken twice and Jamal has not spoken. The topic is homework on weekends. Finish your turn by inviting him.
Answer
Model: Kerja rumah hujung minggu boleh dikurangkan supaya murid sempat berehat bersama keluarga. Bagaimana pula pandangan Jamal?
Why it works: a short point with a purpose, then an invitation by name. The turn is two sentences long.
Situation 7. A classmate has spoken for a long time and the others look tired. You want to move the discussion on without interrupting. What do you say once they pause?
Answer
Model: Terima kasih, Hakim, atas pandangan yang terperinci itu. Mungkin kita boleh mendengar pandangan Nisa dan Lim pula.
Why it works: it thanks the speaker, stays courteous, and directs the floor to two classmates. It waits for the pause and does not cut in.
If your replies felt weak
Replies 1 and 2 point to entering a discussion. Return to entering a discussion politely. Replies 3 and 5 point to linking a point to an earlier one, covered in building on another speaker’s point.
Reply 4 points to disagreeing respectfully with reasons. Replies 6 and 7 point to balancing contribution with listening. If the same problem returns, online one-to-one SPM Bahasa Melayu tuition lets a teacher play the other speaker.
