Literary comprehension practice

Literary comprehension: practice with answers

You have read the literary comprehension lessons and want fresh extracts to try them on.

These seven questions use short original extracts. Plan each answer with a point, a short quotation and an explanation, then open the answer.

The lessons are in literary comprehension. Use the timed original practice session builder to attempt the set against a clock.

Questions 1 to 4: characters, themes and lessons

Question 1. Kak Long menyapu halaman dari pagi, walaupun tiada siapa yang menyuruhnya. Why does Kak Long sweep the yard?

Answer

She sweeps because she takes responsibility without being told. The phrase “tiada siapa yang menyuruhnya” shows she acts on her own, which suggests she is bertanggungjawab (responsible).

Question 2. Razif tersenyum apabila gurunya memuji rakannya, lalu menepuk bahu rakannya itu. What does this show about Razif?

Answer

It shows he is generous and free of jealousy. He smiles and “menepuk bahu rakannya” when a friend is praised, which suggests he is happy for someone else’s success.

Question 3. In a story, a boy hides his broken toy and later confesses to his father. The father forgives him. What is one lesson of the story?

Answer

One lesson is that honesty is better than hiding a mistake. The boy confesses and is forgiven. A lesson is what the reader is meant to learn, and it is written as advice or a conclusion.

Question 4. The same story shows a family where a child is afraid of punishment. Is “fear of punishment” the theme, the issue or a lesson? Explain in one sentence.

Answer

It is an issue: a problem the story raises, here a child’s fear of punishment for a mistake. The theme is the main idea, such as honesty, and the lesson is what the reader learns. The lesson on separating these terms covers the difference.

Questions 5 to 7: comparing and planning

Question 5. Text A (verse): Lampu kecil di tingkap malam, / menanti anak pulang. Text B (notice): Sila tutup lampu apabila keluar dari bilik. Do the texts share a main idea, and how does each present its own?

Answer

Both are about a light, but with different ideas: waiting for someone in Text A and saving energy in Text B. A comparison answer notes that they do not share the main idea, only the image of a light.

Technique: Text A uses a quiet image of waiting, whereas Text B gives a direct instruction. Saying the texts differ in idea is a valid comparison.

Question 6. The answer Nisa mengangkat beg nenek dan membawanya ke rumah was given to the question “What kind of person is Nisa?” Improve it.

Answer

The answer retells the action. A better answer is: Nisa seorang yang bertimbang rasa. Dia “mengangkat beg nenek”, yang menunjukkan dia sanggup membantu orang tua tanpa diminta.

The point (trait), a short quotation and an explanation are all present.

Question 7. Meja makan itu sunyi. Ayah membaca akhbar, dan Adik menatap pinggannya tanpa menyentuh nasi. Plan an answer to: “How does Adik feel?”

Answer

Plan: Point: sad or worried. Evidence: “tanpa menyentuh nasi”. Explanation: he has no appetite, and the silent table suggests something is wrong.

Answer: Adik berasa risau atau sedih. Dia menatap pinggannya “tanpa menyentuh nasi”, yang menunjukkan dia hilang selera kerana suasana yang sunyi.

Common questions

How should I attempt these questions?

Write a plan with a point, evidence and explanation before the full answer. Then open the answer and check that your evidence is short and that the explanation says why. Redo one question the next day without looking.

Are these from real set texts?

No. Every extract is original and written for practice, so no set text is quoted. They train the skills, and you should apply them to your own school texts as well.

What if I get most of them wrong?

Return to the lesson for the question type and retry those questions only. A pattern, such as always stopping at the evidence, points to one missing step that is quick to train.

If your answers still retell instead of explain, a one-to-one BM teacher can read them beside the extract and show where the explanation should start. Tell us which question numbers went wrong.
