Confirm the text before you revise it. Notes built on the wrong novel, or on details that belong to a different edition, cannot be repaired by working harder later.
This lesson is part of novel study methods. A shorter explanation is in checking which novel to study before building revision notes.
What should I check before I start?
Use four checks. Write the answer to each at the top of your notes page.
- Text: the exact title for your form and zone, confirmed by your teacher.
- Edition: the publisher and year printed inside your copy.
- Scope: the chapters or sections your school expects you to study.
- Question style: the kind of question your teacher sets, such as character, value or event.
Confirm the current position with your teacher and with BPK, the Ministry of Education’s curriculum division, because the text can change between years.
Worked example: an edition mismatch
The example is original. Hakim borrows a senior’s notes that say “the flood scene is on page 84”. In his own copy, page 84 is in the middle of a different chapter.
He writes an answer that quotes the scene from his senior’s notes, but the line he copies does not appear in his edition. The marker cannot match it to the text he studied.
Hakim repairs his notes by labelling the event “the flood scene, chapter 9” and adding the page number from his own copy. Now the reference points to the same event in any edition, and the page number helps him find it fast.
The mistake that costs marks
The slip is to trust inherited notes without checking them. The notes may come from a different text, a different edition or a different year, and a clean-looking table hides the problem.
| Habit | Risk | Better habit |
|---|---|---|
| Copying a senior’s page numbers | Pages differ between editions | Use chapter labels, then add your own pages |
| Revising from a film or a summary | Details can differ from the text | Verify each event in the novel |
| Assuming the text never changes | The list can change between years | Confirm the text with your teacher each year |
Check yourself
Your friend in another school gives you a full set of notes on a novel. List three things you must verify before using them.
Answer
First, verify that the novel is the same as the prescribed text for your form and zone. Second, verify that the edition matches, or replace page numbers with references from your own copy. Third, verify each event against your own reading, because your friend’s notes may include mistakes or details that are not in the text.
What to study next
Once the text is confirmed, start your notes with building a character-event-evidence table. Use the claim, evidence and explanation revision desk to test what you write.
