Choosing the best event for a question

You remember several scenes, but you pick the first one that comes to mind.

A good event answers the question directly, can be proved from the text and is easy to explain in a few sentences. When you have several candidates, score each one on those three tests and choose the highest.

This lesson belongs to novel study methods. It builds on connecting an event to a stated value.

How do I rank candidate events?

Give each event a score out of two for each test, where two is strong, one is partial and zero is weak.

Test Question to ask
Fit Does the event show exactly what the question asks?
Proof Can I state a checked detail from the text?
Explanation Can I link it to the question in two sentences?

Worked example with an original mini-story

This story is original. Ali is a clerk at a small workshop.

In chapter 3 he reports a pricing error that favours the workshop. In chapter 5 he misses lunch to finish an urgent repair. In chapter 7 he helps a new worker learn the tools.

Question: Nyatakan satu nilai murni yang ditunjukkan oleh Ali dan berikan satu peristiwa yang menunjukkannya. Suppose you choose the value jujur.

Event Fit Proof Explanation Total
Reports the pricing error (ch. 3) 2 2 2 6
Misses lunch for the repair (ch. 5) 0 2 1 3
Teaches the new worker (ch. 7) 0 2 1 3

The chapter 3 event wins. Reporting an error that benefits his own workplace is a clear choice for honesty, and the explanation is direct. The other two show diligence and helpfulness, so they fit different nilai.

The mistake that costs marks

The slip is to choose the event you remember best. Ali’s missed lunch feels vivid, so a student writes it for jujur, then struggles to explain why honesty is involved.

The repair is to choose the nilai first, then scan your table for the event with the highest fit. If you chose the event first, check whether the value follows from the action, not from your memory of the scene.

Check yourself

Using the same story, choose the best event for the nilai tekun and score it against one other event.

Answer

The best event is missing lunch to finish the urgent repair (chapter 5): fit 2, proof 2, explanation 2, total 6. It shows Ali keeps working hard until the task is done.

The pricing-error event scores low for tekun: fit 0, proof 2, explanation 1, total 3. It shows honesty, which is a different nilai.

What to study next

Test your choices under light time pressure in the novel study methods practice set. Log the events you picked wrongly in the mistake log and paper-error review.

Common questions

How many events should I use in an answer?

Follow the number the question asks for. If the question does not state a number, choose the events that fully support your points, and give each event its own explanation rather than listing more events with less detail.

Should I choose the most dramatic event?

Not automatically. The best event is the one that most directly shows what the question asks. A quiet scene with clear proof beats a dramatic scene that only loosely fits.

How fast should the choice be?

Spend one minute reading the question and testing two or three candidates. A quick scorecard in the margin saves time later because you will not stop midway and change events.

If you often choose an event that only half answers the question, a one-to-one BM teacher can rehearse choosing with you against past-style questions on your own text.
