Human resources is about getting the right people, helping them do the job well, and keeping them motivated. This page shows how the lessons connect and where to start.
The chapter sits in SPM Business and links to the wider picture in functional areas, where human resources works alongside finance, marketing and operations.
How do the skills connect?
Concepts come first, then motivation, then a staffing plan, then careful reading of claims.
- Explaining recruitment, training and performance concepts covers how a business finds, prepares and reviews staff.
- Comparing financial and non-financial motivation shows how pay and other rewards affect effort.
- Planning staffing for a fictional case turns the concepts into a decision with numbers.
- Separating business theory from promises about this tuition service teaches you to read a claim as a tendency, not a guarantee.
Test yourself with the human resources practice set.
What does an applied answer look like?
An applied answer names the concept, uses a detail from the case and states the effect on the business. A definition stops at the term.
Here is an invented case. Warung Sinar has two cooks and a queue that reaches the door at lunch. The owner considers hiring one more cook.
A definition says, “Recruitment is finding new staff.” An applied answer says, “Warung Sinar should recruit one more cook, because two cooks cannot clear the lunch queue. More staff may shorten waiting time, but the owner must check that extra wages are covered by extra sales.”
Where should you start?
Start with the skill your last answer missed.
- You mix up recruitment, selection and training: open the concepts lesson.
- You list motivation methods but cannot choose one: open the motivation lesson.
- You cannot turn workload into a number of staff: open the staffing lesson.
- You write “will definitely improve” in answers: open the claims lesson.
Can one-to-one lessons help here?
They help when a student knows the terms but cannot decide what a business should do. A teacher can give you a fresh staffing case and listen to your reasoning as you work through it. See online one-to-one Business tuition.
