Chinese Language · Argumentative composition

Building a conclusion from the argument

Your ending either repeats the introduction word for word or starts a brand new idea.

A conclusion gathers the reasons you used, restates your position as their result, and adds one short closing step. It closes the argument you built, and does not open another.

This lesson completes argumentative composition. It follows addressing an alternative view fairly. The Chinese samples are original.

What is the gather, restate, close routine?

  1. Gather: name your reasons in one short sentence, for example starting with 由此可见.
  2. Restate: give your position in fresh wording, joined to the reasons with 因此.
  3. Close: end with one step, such as a suggestion or a call to act.

The three parts can fit in three or four sentences.

Worked example: saving water

Task: 《青少年应该学会节约用水》. The body paragraphs gave two reasons: 节约用水能减少家庭开支, and it 养成爱惜资源的习惯.

Built conclusion: 由此可见,节约用水既能减少家庭的水费开支,也能培养青少年爱惜资源的习惯。因此,青少年应该从日常小事做起,学会节约用水。比如刷牙时关上水龙头,就能让家人每个月省下一点水费。

Check the routine. Gather: 减少开支 and 爱惜资源, the same two reasons as in the body. Restate: 青少年应该……学会节约用水, in new words. Close: a small, doable suggestion.

The word 由此可见 tells the reader that the ending follows from what was argued.

The mistake that costs marks

The slips are a repeated ending and a new-topic ending.

Ending Problem
我认为青少年应该学会节约用水。(same as the first paragraph) Repeats the introduction, so the argument appears not to move.
另外,保护森林也很重要,值得大家继续思考。 Opens a new topic with no support.
由此可见,节约用水既能减少开支,也能培养爱惜资源的习惯,因此青少年应该学会节约用水。 Collects both reasons and restates the position.

Another slip is to write a conclusion about the topic in general, such as 水是生命之源, without returning to the position asked in the task.

Check yourself

Your composition argued 《学校应该设立午休时间》 with two reasons: 午休能恢复精神, and it 提高下午的专注力. Write a three-sentence conclusion in Chinese using gather, restate and close.

Answer

Model: 由此可见,午休既能让学生恢复精神,也能提高下午上课的专注力。因此,学校应该设立一段固定的午休时间。希望校方能先在一个年级试行,看看学生的反应,再决定是否推广。

Gather: both reasons are named. Restate: 学校应该设立……午休时间, with new wording. Close: a practical suggestion that does not add a new reason.

Your wording will differ. Check that you used only the reasons from your body, and that the last sentence ties to the position.

Common questions

What should a conclusion contain?

It should collect the reasons you gave in a short line, restate your position as a result of those reasons, and end with a closing step such as a suggestion or a call to act. Keep it short and on the same topic.

Can I use the same words as my introduction?

Restate the position in fresh wording. Copying the introduction word for word suggests the argument has not moved anywhere. A small change, such as adding 由此可见, shows the reasons led to the position.

Is it wrong to add a new reason in the conclusion?

Yes, avoid it. A new reason has no example behind it, so the ending looks unfinished. Keep new ideas for the body paragraphs, where you can develop them.

How long should the conclusion be?

Three or four sentences are enough for most SPM compositions. Follow the word limit in your paper, and leave yourself time to write the ending rather than stopping abruptly.

If your endings always feel abrupt, a one-to-one Chinese teacher can read your whole composition and help you write a conclusion that collects the reasons you actually used.
