A story about a whole day spreads the reader’s attention over many small things. A story about one significant event gives the reader a reason to stay. Choosing that event is the first pass of revision.
This lesson belongs to revising an original Chinese narrative. It pairs with planning conflict, development and resolution.
How do you pick the event?
Ask three questions of each event in your draft.
- Did something change? A decision, a feeling, a relationship.
- Would the story break without it? If you could delete it, it is not the event.
- Does it connect to the topic? For “一次难忘的经历”, the event must feel memorable, not routine.
The event that answers yes to all three becomes the centre. Everything else shrinks to a sentence or disappears.
Worked example
Original draft opening: “早上六点我起床,刷牙,吃早餐,坐巴士去学校。上了华文课、数学课和科学课,中午吃了饭,下午打了球。放学后我回家,做了功课,晚上睡觉。”
This is a string of routine actions, and none of them differs from any other day.
Test the events.
| Event | Changed something? | Keep? |
|---|---|---|
| 起床, 刷牙, 吃早餐 | No | Cut |
| 华文课发回作文 | Yes, got a low mark and a comment | Candidate |
| 下午打球 | No | Cut |
Rewritten opening: “华文老师把作文簿发回来,封面上只写了一个红色的‘62’。我合上簿子,听见同桌轻轻地说:‘没关系。’”
The story now begins at the moment that matters. One earlier event, the morning routine, can be dropped into a single line of background if needed: “那天早上,我本来心情很好。”
The mistake that costs marks
The slip is an even spread: each event gets the same number of words.
| Draft | Problem |
|---|---|
| Many events, one sentence each | No event has room to develop. |
| One event, three paragraphs of detail | The reader has time to feel it. |
Aim to give the chosen moment most of the space. If you are unsure, count: if the important scene has fewer sentences than the morning routine, the balance is wrong.

Topic: “一次难忘的经历”. Draft summary: 早上去海边,中午吃烤鱼,下午捡贝壳,傍晚弟弟差点被浪卷走,晚上回家。Choose the event and write a first sentence.
Answer
The significant event is “傍晚弟弟差点被浪卷走”. It changes the feelings and relationships in the story, and the day would not be memorable without it. The earlier events become background.
A sample opening: “傍晚,天色变暗,一个大浪扑来,我只来得及看见弟弟手里的红桶被卷走。” The first sentence places the reader in the moment. Any earlier detail, such as the fish lunch, only needs to appear if it explains something later.
What to study next
Continue with the second pass, developing a character change through actions. Mark your chosen event on the Chinese composition structure planner before rewriting.
