SPM Computer Science terms and question words

You read the question in English but learned the term in Malay, or the other way round.

This glossary lists 22 terms that students mix up in Sains Komputer. Each has an English name, a Malay equivalent, a short example and the term it is confused with.

Use it beside SPM Computer Science while you study. The BM-English terminology bridge adds Chinese explanations. Wording differs between textbooks, so check yours.

How do you use this list?

Start with the confused pairs. Write one example that separates each pair. For instance, a program that should average three marks but prints their total runs without a message, so it is a logic error and not a syntax error.

For the skills behind the terms, see programming foundations and data and databases. The exam guide shows how command words change the answer.

Common questions

Why does this glossary give both English and Malay?

Sains Komputer questions can be set in Malay or English, and textbooks use both. Knowing both labels for each term helps you read either version of a question. Use the wording your school and textbook use when you answer.

Are the Malay terms exact textbook wording?

They follow common usage in Malaysian materials, but wording can vary between textbooks and some terms are kept in English. Check your school's textbook for the exact phrase, and copy that form into your answers.

How should I study a glossary?

Cover one column and test yourself on the other, five terms at a time. Then write your own one-line example for each term. Seeing a term in a small program or table helps it stay in memory.

Which pairs are easiest to confuse?

Validation and verification, syntax error and logic error, and primary key and foreign key cause the most mix-ups. Learn each pair with a one-line example, such as an empty input that is rejected (validation) and a number typed twice to catch typing mistakes (verification).

If exam wording keeps changing how you read a question, a one-to-one Computer Science teacher can ask you to restate each question in your own words and link it to the right term.
