Complete a mixed drawing practice set

Each skill works alone, but a mixed set on one object makes you lose the thread.

A mixed set tests several skills on one object. Read every task first, write down the object’s three dimensions, and check after each task.

This lesson sits in integrated drawing practice and follows reviewing common mistakes.

What is the routine for a mixed set?

  1. Read all tasks. Write the object’s width, height and depth.
  2. Do tasks in order, with a one-line check after each.
  3. If stuck, write an assumption, move on, and return.
  4. Finish with the six-slip scan from the mistakes lesson.

The worked set: one original bracket

The bracket is 60 mm wide, 40 mm high and 30 mm deep. It is an L-shape: the left 20 mm is full height, and the right 40 mm is 15 mm high. Both parts are 30 mm deep.

Task 1. A view shows a dashed line at height 15 running across a rectangle. Which view is it, and what does the line mean?

It is the side view from the left. The right part is behind the tall left part, so its top edge at height 15 is hidden.

Task 2. The front view is drawn at 1:2. What are the drawn width and height?

Drawn width = 60 ÷ 2 = 30 mm. Drawn height = 40 ÷ 2 = 20 mm.

Task 3. The front view shows the L-shape and the top view is a rectangle 60 × 30. Give the side view outline.

Depth and height: 30 wide, 40 high, with the dashed line at height 15.

Task 4. A top view has its step line at x = 25. Is this consistent with the front view?

No. The front view puts the step at x = 20. The views disagree by 5 mm, so the top view line should move to x = 20.

Task 5. Draw the bracket in cabinet oblique. What are the drawn receding edge length and the drawn front face?

The front face is true shape: 60 × 40 with the step. Receding edges are at half length: 30 ÷ 2 = 15 mm at 45°.

Every task used the same three numbers, 60, 40 and 30, so no figure had to be guessed.

The mistake: treating each task as new

A student reads Task 4 and measures the top view to get 25 by eye, without going back to the front view’s 20. The earlier tasks already held the number.

Step Wrong Right
Source of the step position Eye, from the top view The 20 mm left part, from the front view
Checking against earlier tasks Skipped Compared with Task 3’s views
Outcome Error passes 5 mm disagreement found

In a linked set, earlier tasks hold the facts. Go back to them before you measure or guess.

Check yourself

A second bracket is 80 mm wide, 50 mm high and 25 mm deep, with a tall left part 30 mm wide and a right part 20 mm high. What are the dashed-line height and the outline of the side view from the left, and what is the receding edge at cabinet oblique?

Answer

The side view outline is 25 wide (depth) by 50 high, with a dashed line at height 20, since the right part’s top is behind the tall part. In cabinet oblique, the receding edge is 25 ÷ 2 = 12.5 mm at 45°.

Common questions

How do I start a mixed set?

Read every task first and note the object's width, height and depth. Then do the tasks you can finish quickly. Returning to the harder ones with the whole object already in your head saves time.

Why are mixed sets harder than single-topic ones?

You must switch skills, and each task often depends on the last. A slip early on carries into later tasks. A short check after each task limits the damage.

Should I do the tasks in order?

Yes, because later tasks use earlier results. If you are stuck on one task, note it, move on with a stated assumption, and return later.

How long should a mixed set take?

Follow the time suggested in your source. As a habit, give each task a fixed slot and move on when it ends, so one task does not take the whole set.

When mixed sets feel slower than single-topic ones, one-to-one Lukisan Kejuruteraan lessons let a teacher time you on a linked set and show which task slows you down.
