SPM Geography terms and question words

You know the ideas in Geography, but the English and Malay terms and question words keep blurring together.

This glossary pairs twenty-three Geography terms and question words with Bahasa Melayu, an example and a warning about what each is confused with. Use it beside your notes and check the first word of every question.

It supports the whole SPM Geography guide. For a wider word bridge that includes Chinese explanations, try the BM and English terminology bridge.

Question words and what they expect

Question word Bahasa Melayu What the answer needs Confused with
Describe Huraikan What the pattern looks like, with figures Explain

Compare Bandingkan Similarity or difference in the same sentence List
Suggest Cadangkan A reasoned idea that fits the evidence State a fact
Justify Wajarkan A choice with evidence for it Explain

How do I use this list?

Before writing, circle the question word and the measure it asks about. If the word is describe, quote figures from the data. If it is explain, add a reason.

Keep the list beside the practice sets and read each term aloud in both languages. For a teacher to check your understanding of terms in your own answers, see online one-to-one Geography tuition.

Common questions

Do I need to learn both English and Malay terms?

Learn the language your paper uses, and keep the other language beside it. Some students study in one language but see terms in the other in class, so a short pairing list helps.

What is the most common command word mistake?

Answering describe when the question says explain. Describing tells what a pattern looks like, while explaining gives the reason behind it. Check the first word of every question before writing.

How is correlation different from cause?

Correlation means two things change together. Cause means one makes the other happen. Two maps can match without either causing the other, so say correlation unless the evidence shows the mechanism.

Where can I see the official syllabus terms?

Check your textbook and the current syllabus documents from the Curriculum Development Division (bpk.moe.gov.my) and Lembaga Peperiksaan (lp.moe.gov.my) for the wording your exam uses.

If question words still trip you up on paper, a one-to-one Geography lesson can practise reading the command word first and planning the answer to match it.
