Cover each answer, write your working, then open the answer to compare. The questions run from easier to harder.
They come from the cluster on population distribution and density. Use the timed original practice session builder when you repeat the set.
Part A: calculating
Question 1. A district has 18 000 residents and an area of 60 km². Find its population density.
Answer
18 000 ÷ 60 = 300 per km².
Question 2. Bandar Laut has 72 000 residents. The town covers 18 km² and the surrounding district covers 360 km². Find the density of the town.
Answer
The population belongs to the town, so use the town’s area: 72 000 ÷ 18 = 4 000 per km². Dividing by 360 km² would give 200, which is the wrong pairing.
Question 3. A plantation settlement has 25 000 residents on 5 000 hectares. Find its density in people per km².
Answer
Convert: 5 000 ÷ 100 = 50 km². Then 25 000 ÷ 50 = 500 per km².
Question 4. District C has 10 000 residents in 40 km². District D has 4 000 residents in 80 km². How many times denser is C than D?
Answer
C: 10 000 ÷ 40 = 250 per km². D: 4 000 ÷ 80 = 50 per km². Then 250 ÷ 50 = 5 times denser.
Part B: averages and legends
Question 5. A state has a density of 200 per km². A student writes “every town in the state is crowded”. Explain why this claim is not supported.
Answer
The average spreads people evenly over the whole state, but people do not live evenly. A large sparse highland can sit next to a dense port town and still give an average of 200. District data would be needed to describe a particular town.
Question 6. A legend has these classes in people per km²: 0 to 99, 100 to 499, 500 to 999, 1 000 and above. District X is shaded 100 to 499 and District Y is shaded 500 to 999.
Which statement is safe? (a) Y is about twice as dense as X. (b) Y is denser than X.
Answer
(b) is safe, because every value in Y’s class is at least 500 and every value in X’s class is below 500. (a) is not safe, since the ratio could be close to 1 or above 9.
Part C: explaining
Question 7. A delta region is densely settled, and its hills are nearly empty. The supplied factors are fertile flat land, a river port, and steep forested slopes. Write a linked explanation of three sentences.
Answer
One model answer: “People cluster on the delta because the land is flat and fertile, which supports farming and easy building. The river port adds jobs and trade, so more families settle near it. The hills stay sparse because steep forested slopes are costly to build on and leave little land for homes.”
Each factor has a reason and both areas are covered.
Question 8. District R has 6 000 residents in 1 500 hectares, and is shaded in the 100 to 499 class. Is the shading consistent with the figures?
Answer
Convert: 1 500 ÷ 100 = 15 km². Then 6 000 ÷ 15 = 400 per km², which lies in the 100 to 499 class. The shading is consistent.
If you got these wrong
- Questions 1 to 4: revisit calculating density with a matched area and population.
- Question 5: read a dense settlement versus a state-wide average.
- Questions 6 and 8: study reading a choropleth legend.
- Question 7: practise explaining a pattern with several factors.
