Population and settlements practice

Population and settlements: practice

You want one mixed set that covers density, migration and settlements together.

Cover each answer, write your working, then open the answer to compare. The questions mix the lessons of population and settlements.

Log your slips in the mistake log and paper-error review. Repeat the set later using the timed original practice session builder.

Part A: population numbers

Question 1. A district has 36 000 residents in 90 km². Find its density.

Answer

36 000 ÷ 90 = 400 per km².

Question 2. A region has crowded settlement on a flat coastal plain with a port, and few people in steep inland forest. Write two linked sentences explaining the pattern.

Answer

“People cluster on the coastal plain because flat land is easy to build on, and the port gives jobs and trade. The inland forest is sparse because steep slopes make building costly and leave little land for homes.”

Question 3. A town has 600 births, 200 deaths, 500 in-migrants and 900 out-migrants. Find the natural increase, the net migration and the total change.

Answer

Natural increase: 600 − 200 = +400. Net migration: 500 − 900 = −400. Total change: 400 + (−400) = 0, so the population stays the same even though both parts changed.

Question 4. A state has a density of 120 per km². Does this show that its capital is crowded? Explain.

Answer

No. The figure is an average over the whole state. The capital could be far denser or far sparser than 120, and district data would be needed to say.

Part B: migration, settlements and growth

Question 5. A family leaves a village after the local school closes and rubber prices fall. They move to a town with factory jobs. Name the two push factors and one pull factor.

Answer

Push factors: the school closure and the fall in rubber prices, because they make the village less attractive. Pull factor: the factory jobs, because they draw people to the town.

Question 6. A town has a jetty, a customs office, warehouses and a container yard. Name its main function and give the evidence.

Answer

Main function: port and trading. Evidence: the jetty and container yard handle cargo, the warehouses store it and the customs office controls its movement.

Question 7. Town P’s population rises from 80 000 to 100 000. Find the percentage increase.

Answer

Increase: 100 000 − 80 000 = 20 000. Then 20 000 ÷ 80 000 × 100 = 25%.

Part C: wording

Question 8. Rewrite for an SPM answer: “Migrants make the city dirty.” The city’s population grew by 30 000 in five years.

Answer

“A rise of 30 000 residents in five years may increase the amount of waste to collect and the demand for housing, if services do not expand at the same pace.”

The sentence names a change in numbers and a pressure, and does not blame a group.

Common questions

Do these questions cover the whole chapter?

They sample each lesson area: density, distribution, migration, settlement function and careful wording. Use the detailed practice sets in each cluster for more questions on one skill.

Are these from past SPM papers?

No. All places and numbers are original, so the set builds the skills without copying any paper.

How should I mark myself?

Award yourself marks for method, answer and unit separately. Log each lost mark in the mistake log so you can see which skill is slipping.

After you attempt these alone, a one-to-one Geography teacher can sort your slips by topic and start with the area that lost the most marks.
