Form 4 Mathematics builds algebra, reasoning and data skills that the whole of SPM uses. This page lists the chapters, shows how they fit together and suggests where to start.
It belongs to SPM Mathematics. The next stage is the Form 5 route.
What are the Form 4 topics?
The algebra group is quadratic functions and equations, number bases and linear inequalities in two variables.
The reasoning group is logical reasoning, set operations and networks in graph theory.
The graphs and data group is motion graphs, dispersion of ungrouped data and combined event probability. The money group is consumer mathematics and financial planning.
Schools may teach the chapters in a different order, so follow your class sequence for school work.
How do the topics connect?
Consider this example. A rectangle is 3 cm longer than it is wide, and its area is 28 cm². Find the width.
Let the width be x cm. Then x(x + 3) = 28, so x² + 3x − 28 = 0. That factorises as (x + 7)(x − 4) = 0, so x = −7 or x = 4.
A width cannot be negative, so x = 4, and the rectangle is 4 cm by 7 cm. One problem used a quadratic equation and then a check against the context.
Where should you start?
- Just began Form 4: read the algebra group first and use the algebra step repair trainer when a line of working feels unsure.
- Behind school: find the earliest topic where your working goes wrong, repair that, then return to the current chapter.
- Comfortable and wanting more: try the mixed comparison pages in choosing the right summary of a data set.
Record repeated errors in the mistake log and paper-error review, so you can see which habit to fix first.
When is tuition worth considering?
Free lessons show the method. A one-to-one teacher watches you meet a question you have not seen, and shows how to begin it.
