Develop one Tamil point with an example

Your Tamil essay points are right, but each paragraph stops after one short sentence.

A developed point has four parts: the point, an explanation, an example and a link back to the question. Most Tamil essay paragraphs lose marks because they stop after the first part.

This lesson is part of SPM Tamil writing and development. Start with turning an essay question into a focused plan if you have not planned your points yet.

What are the four parts of a developed point?

Use this frame on every main paragraph.

  1. Point: one clear sentence that states the idea.
  2. Explanation: one or two sentences saying why the point is true.
  3. Example: a specific, invented or real situation.
  4. Link: a sentence tying the paragraph back to the question.

The frame keeps the paragraph in order, so the reader follows the idea from claim to proof to question.

Worked example: one point developed

The question is “மாணவர்களுக்கு நூல் வாசிப்பு ஏன் அவசியம்?” and the point is that reading builds vocabulary.

Bare point: வாசிப்பு மாணவரின் சொல்வளத்தைப் பெருக்குகிறது.

Developed paragraph:

Label each part. The first sentence is the point, the second is the explanation, the third and fourth form the example, and the last is the link. Kavitha is a worked example, not a real student.

Why the example has to be specific

The example shows the reader that the point is true in real life. A vague example, such as “நிறைய மாணவர்கள் வாசிப்பதால் பயனடைகிறார்கள்” (many students benefit from reading), repeats the point and proves nothing.

The better example names one person, one action and one result. Ask yourself: who, doing what, with what outcome?

The mistake to avoid

The common mistake is a stack of bare points, with no development.

Weak paragraph Stronger paragraph
Three points, one line each One point, four to six lines
No example One specific example
No link to the question Final sentence ties back

Another slip is an example that belongs to a different point. If Kavitha’s story were about tiredness, it would not support a point on vocabulary. Check that every detail in the example supports the point above it.

A quick test for your own paragraph

Underline the four parts in a different colour each. If one colour is missing, add that part. If the example line could be attached to any point, it is too vague, and you should add a detail.

Check yourself

Develop this point into a paragraph with all four parts: “வாசிப்பு சிந்தனை ஆற்றலை வளர்க்கிறது.”

Answer

One possible answer:

Check that the point, explanation, example and link are each present. Any answer with all four parts and a specific example is acceptable.

What to study next

Next, see how to connect paragraphs in linking paragraphs without repeating the same idea. Then test the whole cluster in the writing and development practice set.

Common questions

How long should one developed paragraph be?

Enough to state the point, explain it, give one example and link back. For most essay points that is four to six sentences. Count the parts, not the length, because each part has a job.

What counts as a good example?

A specific, believable situation with a person, a place or an action. It should prove the point, not just repeat it. Invented examples are fine if they are realistic.

Can I use the same example twice?

Avoid it. Each point should have its own example, or the essay sounds repetitive and the second point looks thin. Collect a few different examples before you write.

What if I cannot think of an example in the exam?

Use a simple everyday situation at school or at home. A plain, clear example is better than a vague one, and you can practise a few in advance for common themes.

If your paragraphs keep ending after the first sentence, one-to-one Tamil lessons let a teacher develop your own points with you and show where the explanation or example is missing.
