BM grammar contrast practice

You know two Malay forms look alike but cannot tell which one the sentence needs.

This tool gives you short Bahasa Melayu sentences with one gap and asks which form fits the context. It helps students who mix up look-alike forms such as di and di-, kerana and supaya, or kita and kami.

Everything you enter stays on this device.

How do I use it?

  1. Choose an area: mixed, word formation or sentence grammar.
  2. Read each sentence and choose one option. You can skip items.
  3. Press the check button to see the accepted answer and the reason for each item you answered.
  4. Use the new set button for another round of eight items.

How does it work?

Every item comes from a fixed bank of original sentences. Each sentence has a list of accepted options, so a sentence with two valid forms accepts both.

The order of items and options is shuffled for each set. Your answer is matched by its text, not its position, so shuffling never changes the key.

If you miss items, the tool links to the matching practice page for morphology or syntax.

What does a worked example look like?

This is a worked example. “Dia belajar bersungguh-sungguh ___ dapat lulus cemerlang.” The second part states an aim, so supaya fits.

Now change the sentence: “Dia lulus cemerlang ___ belajar bersungguh-sungguh.” The second part is now the reason for the result, so kerana fits and supaya does not. The words are the same pair, but the context decides.

What are the limits?

The bank holds a fixed number of items, so it trains recognition of common contrasts and does not cover all of Malay grammar. A sentence may allow more than one form, and the key lists only the ones judged valid for that context.

The tool does not proofread your writing and cannot judge how natural your Bahasa Melayu sounds. Check the current syllabus on the Lembaga Peperiksaan website.

Where do I go next?

Work through morphology practice for imbuhan and spelling, and syntax practice for connectors and sentence patterns. The morphology section explains the rules behind meN- and ber-.

To have a teacher read your writing, see Bahasa Melayu tuition and the one-hour trial class (from RM50).

Common questions

Why are both oleh sebab and oleh kerana accepted?

Both are standard ways to state a reason. The key lists every accepted form for each sentence, so an alternative that is valid in Malay is not marked wrong.

Why is dibawah wrong but ditaip right?

Bawah is a place word, so di is a preposition and is written apart: di bawah. In ditaip, di- is a passive prefix on a verb and is joined to it.

Can this check my own sentences?

No. It only checks the items in its bank. It cannot proofread your writing, so ask a teacher to read your own work.

Do the items change every time?

The tool draws a new random set of eight from a fixed bank of items and shuffles the options. Use the new set button to get another round.

If the same kind of item keeps going wrong, a one-to-one Bahasa Melayu teacher can look for the pattern in your own writing and build exercises around it. The one-hour trial class (from RM50) is a real lesson, so bring the items you missed.

  • Online one-to-one lessons for your child with an experienced teacher.
  • Your first class is a one-hour trial, from RM50. The fee is agreed before you book.
  • Happy with the teacher? Continue with lessons of about 1.5 hours. If not, ask for another teacher.
