This set has eight original questions on morphology, ordered from easy to demanding. Attempt each one before opening its answer.
Questions
Question 1. Name the word class of “sungai” in “Sungai itu sangat deras.”
Answer
Kata nama. It names a thing and can be followed by “itu”. The word “deras” is the kata adjektif.
Question 2. Name the class of “sangat” in the same sentence.
Answer
Kata penguat, a kata tugas. It strengthens the adjective “deras” and cannot stand alone.
Question 3. What is the function of ber- in “berlari”?
Answer
It forms a kata kerja tak transitif from “lari”. The action needs no object, as in “Murid itu berlari di padang.”
Question 4. Choose the correct word: “Pintu bilik itu (terbuka / membuka) kerana ditiup angin.”
Answer
Terbuka. The wind caused the state and nobody intended it, so ter- fits. “Membuka” needs a doer who acts on purpose.
Question 5. Turn “tani” into a noun meaning the person who does it, and write the word.
Answer
Petani. The prefix peN- forms the doer, and “petani” is a fixed form that keeps the “t”. For comparison, “penulis” comes from “tulis” with the same function.
Question 6. Build a sentence using kesihatan.
Answer
A model answer: Kesihatan murid perlu diberi perhatian oleh pihak sekolah. The word is a kata nama from “sihat” with ke-…-an, and sits as the subject. Any sentence is acceptable if it keeps the form, adds context and has no grammar slip.
Question 7. Choose the correct word: “Surat itu ditulis (dari / daripada) Pak Cik Rahim.”
Answer
Daripada. Pak Cik Rahim is a person and the source of the letter. “Dari” is kept for places and times of origin.
Question 8. Correct the sentence: “Kami pergi di perpustakaan untuk meminjam buku dari Puan Salmah, dan guru kelas kami adalah Puan Salmah.”
Answer
The corrected sentence is: Kami pergi ke perpustakaan untuk meminjam buku daripada Puan Salmah, dan guru kelas kami ialah Puan Salmah.
There are three repairs. “Di” becomes “ke” because the verb shows movement. “Dari” becomes “daripada” because Puan Salmah is a person and the source. “Adalah” becomes “ialah” because “Puan Salmah” is a noun phrase.
