The most useful Additional Mathematics focus is the earliest place where errors begin. Start with the four options below, then check which one matches your working.
Which focus fits which situation?
| Focus | Sign it fits | First task in lessons |
|---|---|---|
| Algebra repair | Working breaks at a bracket, a sign or a rearrangement, across topics | Rework the one failing step on short questions |
| Method selection | You can solve once told the method, but cannot choose it | Name what the wording signals before any calculation |
| Current school topic | Algebra is sound and one chapter is new | Teach the chapter and test on unfamiliar questions |
| Exam practice | The topics are known but marks vanish under time | Timed questions, then review where marks were lost |
A student needs one main focus and one lighter one. Pick the main one for the first month.
How can you run a quick self-test?
Try this before you enquire.
- Pick a question you got wrong. Cover the method and write what the question gives and what it asks.
- Name the topic and the formula before calculating. If you cannot, note that as a method gap.
- Solve it and check each line. Note the first line where the working goes wrong.
A wrong line early suggests algebra. A blank at step two suggests method selection. The algebra step repair trainer and the prerequisite gap finder help you look closer.
Why does the focus matter for pace?
A student who revisits algebra and studies the current topic at once keeps up with school while repairing. That is slower per lesson at first, and quicker over a term, because errors stop returning.
A student who skips the repair meets the same mistake again in Differentiation and again in Integration, which costs marks twice.
How do you describe it to the teacher?
Say plainly what you noticed, for example “I can do the example, but I do not know which topic a new question is from”. Specific sentences like that shorten the first lesson, because the teacher starts from your description and checks it on real questions.
The structured-answer self-review helps you write down where your working stops.
