Who this tuition helps

Students of this language are a varied group, and three needs are common.

  • Home speaker, school writer. The student speaks with ease but has limited practice with written Gurmukhi and formal answers.
  • Understanding a text. Words are recognised, yet the student cannot explain what a passage means or how the writer shows it.
  • Feedback. The student writes regularly but no one who reads the language checks the writing closely.

Individual feedback is the main reason families look for one-to-one lessons in a language taught to small groups.

What a lesson looks like: supporting a point with evidence

Here is a worked example, shown in English translation so the reasoning is easy to follow.

Passage: a short piece in which a boy walks to his grandfather’s farm each morning and waters the wheat before school. Question: What does the passage show about the boy’s character?

A weak answer says “He is good.” The teacher asks what he does, and what that action shows.

Step Weak answer Stronger answer
Point He is good He is responsible
Evidence (none) He waters the wheat each morning before school
Link (none) He keeps the duty even when it is early, so he can be trusted

The student then rewrites the answer in Punjabi, choosing the words for “responsible” and quoting the line from the passage. The teacher checks spelling, sentence order and whether the evidence truly supports the point.

The student tries the same three steps on a second passage, and the teacher gives feedback on the writing itself.

What one-to-one lessons can and cannot do

Lessons can build reading accuracy, guide written answers and give individual feedback on the student’s own writing. They work best when the student brings recent work to review.

Oral and any other components assessed by the school stay at school. Progress depends on regular reading and writing between lessons.

Try supporting a reading answer with relevant evidence and revising a short response using a checklist. The structured-answer self-review helps check your own answers. Families also ask about Tamil tuition, which follows the same starting steps.

Common questions

My child speaks Punjabi at home but cannot write it well. Is tuition suitable?

Yes. Spoken fluency is a strong start. The teacher builds from what the student can say to reading accuracy, spelling in Gurmukhi and organised written answers.

Can online lessons help with oral or listening components?

Online lessons can practise speaking and listening through conversation with the teacher. Components the school assesses, and any that need a teacher in the room, stay at school.

How much does it cost?

The first class is a one-hour trial from RM50, and the rate depends on the teacher. The fee is agreed before the trial, and you book only if you are happy with it. Lessons are usually about 1.5 hours a class.

How is a teacher found for a less common language?

Tell us the form and what the student needs when you enquire. We assign an experienced teacher for the subject and arrange the trial, and the fee is agreed before the trial.

Which language are lessons taught in?

Lessons are in English or Bahasa Melayu, depending on the subject, and the teacher explains clearly in whichever suits the student. Tell us your preference when you enquire. Exam answers are written in Punjabi as the paper requires.

If you speak the language well but lose marks on reading answers and written accuracy, a teacher giving feedback on your own writing is the most direct help. Tell us the form and what feels hardest. Parents usually arrange the trial.
