Form 4 builds the algebra and graph skills that the whole of Additional Mathematics uses. This page lists the topics in a study order and shows how they fit together.
It belongs to SPM Additional Mathematics. The next stage is the Form 5 route.
What are the Form 4 topics?
The first group builds algebra: Functions, Quadratic Functions, Systems of Equations and Indices, Surds and Logarithms.
The second group applies it: Progressions, Linear Law, Coordinate Geometry, Vectors, Solution of Triangles and Index Numbers.
Your school may teach these in a different order, so follow your teacher’s sequence in class.
How do the topics connect?
One short example shows the link. Find where the line y = x + 1 meets the curve y = x² − 3x + 5.
Put them equal: x² − 3x + 5 = x + 1, so x² − 4x + 4 = 0. That factorises as (x − 2)² = 0, so x = 2 and y = 3.
The equation has one repeated root, so the line touches the curve at (2, 3). Three topics appeared in four lines: a quadratic function, a system of equations and the geometry of a line.
Where should you start?
- Just began Form 4: read the algebra group in order and use the algebra step repair trainer when a line of working feels unsure.
- Behind school: run the prerequisite gap finder, repair the first gap, then catch up topic by topic.
- Comfortable and wanting more: try the mixed problems in geometry problems with several possible approaches.
When is tuition worth considering?
Free lessons show the method. A one-to-one teacher watches you meet a question you have not seen, and shows how to begin it.
