Listening and spoken preparation practice

Listening and spoken preparation: mixed practice

You want to test your listening and speaking, but nobody is there to practise with.

This set has four listening questions and three speaking prompts. A helper reads each script aloud while you cover the page, and you answer before opening the answer.

It belongs to the SPM Arabic guide. If you want a teacher to be your listener, the one-hour trial class (from RM50) is a taught lesson on the Arabic you choose.

Listening questions

Question 1. Script: يبدأُ الدرسُ في الساعةِ التاسعةِ. (The lesson starts at nine o’clock.) What time does the lesson start?

Answer

Nine o’clock. The keyword is التاسعة.

Question 2. Script: ستزورُ الصفَّ معلمةٌ جديدةٌ يومَ الاثنينِ. (A new teacher will visit the class on Monday.) On which day?

Answer

Monday. The keyword is الاثنين.

Question 3. Script: اشترتْ أمي خبزًا وحليبًا وتفاحًا من السوقِ. (My mother bought bread, milk and apples from the market.) List what she bought.

Answer

Bread, milk and apples. Three items: خبز, حليب and تفاح.

Question 4. Script: الملعبُ مغلقٌ اليومَ لأنَّ الأرضَ مبللةٌ. (The field is closed today because the ground is wet.) Why is it closed?

Answer

Because the ground is wet. The word لأنَّ introduces the reason: الأرض مبللة.

Speaking questions

Prepare three keyword notes, then answer aloud in three sentences.

Question 5. تحدثْ عن صديقِكَ. (Talk about your friend.)

Answer

A sample answer: صديقي اسمه سامي. (My friend’s name is Sami.) هو يلعب معي كرة القدم. (He plays football with me.) أحبه لأنه صادق. (I like him because he is honest.) Check that the answer names the friend, gives a detail and gives a reason.

Question 6. ماذا تفعلُ في يومِ العطلةِ؟ (What do you do on a day off?)

Answer

A sample answer: أزور جدتي. (I visit my grandmother.) نأكل معًا. (We eat together.) أحب هذا اليوم. (I like this day.) The answer responds with an activity, adds a detail and closes with a feeling.

Question 7. Follow-up: لماذا تحبُّ هذه الهوايةَ؟ (Why do you like this hobby?) Answer with a direct sentence and a reason using لأنَّ.

Answer

A sample answer: أحبها كثيرًا لأنها تجعلني سعيدًا. (I like it very much because it makes me happy.) A good answer has a direct sentence and one reason.

If you got these wrong

If you missed details in questions 1 to 4, revisit recognising key information in original audio. For question 5 or 6, read preparing a spoken response from brief notes.

For question 7, go to rehearsing follow-up answers. Then use reviewing a private rehearsal to check your own speaking.

Common questions

Who can read the scripts to me?

Any family member or friend can read them, even without strong Arabic, if they read slowly and clearly. You can also ask your teacher. If nobody is free, record yourself reading one day and listen to it the next day.

Are sample speaking answers the only right answer?

No. They show a model of the pattern. Your own topic details will differ. Check that your answer responds to the question, has a reason or detail, and keeps subject and predicate agreeing.

Does this practice predict my exam result?

No. It trains the skills, and it cannot predict a mark. Check the current assessment format with your school and the Lembaga Peperiksaan website.

If you lack a partner to practise with, a one-to-one Arabic teacher can read, ask and listen in real time, then tell you the one change worth making first.

  • Online one-to-one lessons for your child with an experienced teacher.
  • Your first class is a one-hour trial, from RM50. The fee is agreed before you book.
  • Happy with the teacher? Continue with lessons of about 1.5 hours. If not, ask for another teacher.
