Recognise key information in audio

The speaker talks quickly, and by the time you understand one word, the details have gone.

To catch key information in spoken Arabic, decide in advance what kinds of facts you expect, and write only those as single words. This lesson gives you an original script and a routine you can repeat.

It belongs to listening and spoken preparation. Next, learn to prepare a spoken response from brief notes.

How do I practise without an audio file?

Ask someone to read the script below aloud while you look away. A teacher, parent, sibling or friend is enough.

Your own voice recording from yesterday also works.

If you cannot find a reader, read the script slowly yourself to see the structure, then write a new script for next time.

Worked example: a club announcement

Script for the helper to read aloud.

يبدأُ نادي القراءةِ اجتماعَهُ يومَ الأربعاءِ في المكتبةِ بعدَ الحصةِ الثالثةِ. على كلِّ طالبٍ أن يُحضرَ كتابًا واحدًا.

(The reading club begins its meeting on Wednesday in the library after the third period. Every student must bring one book.)

Step 1: predict the categories before listening. An announcement tells you what is happening, the day, the place and time, and the task. Draw four boxes.

Step 2: write keywords while listening.

Box Keyword Full answer
What نادي القراءة the reading club
Day الأربعاء Wednesday
Place and time المكتبة، الحصة الثالثة the library, after the third period
Task كتاب واحد bring one book

Step 3: turn keywords into a sentence. The meeting is on Wednesday in the library, and each student brings one book.

The mistake that costs marks

Some students try to catch every word. They fall behind after the first sentence and lose the second half.

Habit Result
write every word miss the place and the task
write four keywords catch all four details

The fix is to listen for the four boxes, not for sentences.

Check yourself

Ask a helper to read this script, or read it once yourself at normal speed. Write the four details.

تفتحُ المدرسةُ بابَ الملعبِ يومَ الخميسِ في الرابعةِ عصرًا. يلبسُ الطلابُ ثيابَ الرياضةِ.

(The school opens the field gate on Thursday at four in the afternoon. Students wear sports clothes.)

Answer
  • What: opening the field gate.
  • Day: Thursday.
  • Time: four in the afternoon.
  • Task: wear sports clothes.

If you missed one, listen again and note which box stayed empty.

What to study next

After you catch the information, practise giving a short spoken response. Continue with preparing a spoken response from brief notes, then try the listening and spoken practice set.

Common questions

There is no audio on this page. How do I practise?

Ask a family member, friend or your teacher to read the script aloud at normal speed while you cover the text. You can also record your own reading a day earlier and listen to it later. Keep the recording on your own device.

Should I write full sentences while listening?

No. Write single keywords or numbers, such as a day, a place or a time. Full sentences make you fall behind. Afterwards, use your keywords to write the answer in a complete sentence.

How do I know what kind of listening my exam includes?

Check your school assessment plan and the current format on the Lembaga Peperiksaan website. Formats can change between years. This lesson trains the skill that any listening task needs, which is catching key facts.

If listening practice feels impossible alone, a one-to-one Arabic teacher can read short texts at your pace and slow them down until you catch each detail.
