An essay answers the question, and then it sounds good. When language comes first and relevance second, the paragraphs can be fluent and still off target. The repair is to test relevance before polishing.
This page belongs to the SPM Bahasa Melayu guide. The lesson on the check itself is checking whether every paragraph answers the question.
What does the student usually say?
“Bahasa saya sedap, tetapi markah karangan tidak tinggi.” Or: “Cikgu kata isi saya tidak berkaitan dengan soalan.”
A fluent paragraph that misses the task
The question, invented for this page: Huraikan langkah-langkah yang boleh diambil oleh sekolah untuk menggalakkan murid membaca.
The fluent paragraph: Membaca jambatan ilmu, ibarat pelita yang menerangi kegelapan. Sesungguhnya, murid yang gemar membaca akan memperoleh pengetahuan yang luas dan berfikiran terbuka. Bak kata pepatah, buku ialah gedung ilmu yang tidak ternilai harganya.
The language has three figures of speech. Yet the question asks for steps a school can take. The paragraph praises reading and names no step.
The repair names a step (sudut bacaan), gives a concrete example, and ends with a reason. It uses plain, correct Malay, and no peribahasa is needed.
A one-line test
Before polishing a paragraph, finish this sentence: “Perenggan ini menjawab bahagian soalan yang berbunyi ___.”
For the fluent paragraph, the blank would read “langkah-langkah yang boleh diambil oleh sekolah”, and the student cannot honestly fill it. For the repaired paragraph, the blank reads “langkah… oleh sekolah”, and “sudut bacaan” is the step.
If the blank stays empty, rewrite the paragraph. Fine phrasing belongs on top of a paragraph that passes.
Where do peribahasa fit?
A peribahasa works when it explains a point you have already made. It does not replace the point. In the repaired paragraph, a fitting closing line might be “Sedikit demi sedikit, lama-lama menjadi bukit”, but only if the paragraph has shown a gradual routine.
What can I do myself?
- Mark the task word and the named group in the question, and write them at the top of your plan.
- Use the BM essay plan builder to list one relevant step per paragraph before writing.
- After writing, apply the one-line test to each paragraph.
- Read using peribahasa only when they fit the meaning.
When might one-to-one tuition help?
If your paragraphs keep drifting even after the test, a teacher can read your plan with you before you write and stop the drift at the start. That front-loaded feedback is hard to give in a large class.
The one-hour trial class (from RM50) suits this well if you bring a recent essay and its question. Learn more at online one-to-one SPM Bahasa Melayu tuition.
