Explaining a Malay-language correction practice

Explaining a Malay correction: integrated practice

You know the four correction rules and want to test them on new sentences.

These eight original questions mix the four skills, so read each sentence before choosing a rule. Write your correction and a reason, then open the answer.

The lessons are collected in explaining a Malay-language correction. Use the timed original practice session builder to attempt the set against a clock.

Questions 1 to 4: one rule at a time

Question 1. Correct the error: Kertas itu di serahkan kepada guru di pejabat.

Answer

“Di serahkan” becomes diserahkan, because “di” is the passive prefix on the verb “serah”. “Di pejabat” stays apart, because “ke pejabat” makes sense, so it is a preposition.

Question 2. Correct the error: Nama pengetua kami adalah Encik Hamzah.

Answer

A name follows, so the word should be ialah: Nama pengetua kami ialah Encik Hamzah.

Question 3. Correct the error: Tujuan lawatan ini ialah untuk mengenali sejarah tempatan.

Answer

A purpose phrase with “untuk” follows, so the word should be adalah: Tujuan lawatan ini adalah untuk mengenali sejarah tempatan.

Question 4. Rebuild this sentence without changing its meaning: Saya mempunyai satu temu janji dengan doktor gigi.

Answer

The claim is that the speaker has an appointment with a dentist. A natural version is Saya ada temu janji dengan doktor gigi.

“Mempunyai satu” copies the English “have an”, and Malay does not need the number.

Questions 5 to 8: explain and check

Question 5. Rebuild without changing the claim: Ia adalah mustahil untuk siap dalam sejam.

Answer

The claim is that finishing within an hour is impossible. The sentence copies “It is impossible to”. A natural version is Mustahil untuk siap dalam sejam.

Do not write “Kita tidak boleh siap dalam sejam”. That changes “impossible” into “cannot”, which is a different claim.

Question 6. A student changed Laporan itu saya tulis semalam. to Laporan itu ditulis oleh saya semalam. Was this a correction?

Answer

No. The original was correct. With a first-person doer, the passive puts the pronoun before the bare verb. The edit used a third-person pattern, “ditulis oleh”, and introduced a new error.

Question 7. Correct the four errors: Pelajar itu di minta duduk dibangku. Beberapa buku-buku terletak diatas meja.

Answer
  1. “di minta” becomes diminta (passive prefix).
  2. “dibangku” becomes di bangku (preposition before a place).
  3. “beberapa buku-buku” becomes beberapa buku (the doubled plural).
  4. “diatas” becomes di atas (preposition).

Question 8. Explain in one sentence why Ahli jawatankuasa kami ialah Liyana. needs no change.

Answer

A name follows the word, so “ialah” is correct. It links the subject to a noun, and there is no error to correct.

In online one-to-one Bahasa Melayu tuition, a teacher can ask for the rule behind each of your answers.

Common questions

How should I attempt these questions?

Cover the answer, write your correction and then your reason. Open the answer and mark any reason that names no rule. Redo the question the next day from the original sentence without looking.

Are these past-year SPM questions?

No. Every sentence is original and written for practice. They use the skills taught in the four lessons and do not predict a future paper or follow any real marking scheme.

What if I get most of them wrong?

Go back to the lesson for the question type and retry those questions only. If the errors are all of one kind, such as a joined di before a place, one habit is the cause and is quick to train.

If the mixed questions still trip you, a one-to-one BM teacher can read your corrections and show which of the four rules you apply too fast. Tell us which question numbers went wrong.
