One verified event for two question prompts

You know one strong scene, but you cannot tell whether it fits a different question.

One verified event can answer two different questions if you change the angle and keep the facts fixed. The facts come from the text, and the angle comes from the question.

This lesson is part of evidence-led KOMSAS revision. For choosing between several events, see comparing suitable events for a question.

How do I verify an event and choose an angle?

Verify first, then angle. Verification means writing three things from your own copy: the chapter, what happens and one detail you can point to.

Angle means asking which part of the event the question cares about. A question about a nilai needs the character’s action, while a question about a problem needs the situation that caused trouble.

Worked example with an original scene

This scene is invented. In chapter 4, Pak Kassim, a retired ferryman, refuses a developer’s offer for his old boat, and tells his grandson Adi that every scratch is a memory.

Verified record: chapter 4; Pak Kassim refuses the offer; he says every scratch is a memory.

Prompt 1: state one nilai Pak Kassim shows. Angle: his action. Answer: setia, because he keeps the boat even when offered money, which shows loyalty to what he has lived through.

Prompt 2: state one persoalan in the story. Angle: the situation. Answer: konflik antara pembangunan dan warisan, because the developer’s offer puts progress against keeping what has sentimental value.

The facts in both answers are identical. Only the selected detail changes.

The mistake that costs marks

The slip is to paste the same paragraph under both prompts. The answer for persoalan then talks about Pak Kassim’s character and never names the problem the question asked about.

Prompt Wrong angle Right angle
Nilai Describes the developer’s plan Describes Pak Kassim’s refusal
Persoalan Describes Pak Kassim’s feelings Describes the clash between development and heritage

Check yourself

Using the same scene, answer this prompt: state one pengajaran from the event.

Answer

A suitable pengajaran: Kita hendaklah menghargai kenangan dan warisan, bukan hanya nilai wang. The angle is what the reader learns from the result of Pak Kassim’s choice.

The verified facts stay the same: chapter 4, the refusal and the remark about scratches and memories. Only the angle changes, from action or situation to advice.

What to study next

Next, learn to explain why an action proves a quality in explaining the connection between a character action and an inferred quality. Practise angle changes on the claim, evidence and explanation revision desk.

For a teacher to drill angle changes on your own text, see online one-to-one Bahasa Melayu tuition.

Common questions

Can I reuse the same event in two answers?

Yes, if each answer uses a different angle and the detail you choose supports that angle. Across one paper, avoid repeating the same event for every point, but using it for different questions is acceptable.

What does verified mean?

It means you have checked the event in your own copy of the novel. You know the chapter, what happens and the detail you will cite, so you are not relying on a friend's notes or a film.

How do I find the right angle?

Read the key word in the question, such as a nilai, a character trait or a problem. Then pick the detail of the event that speaks to that word and leave the rest out.

If you rely on one favourite scene for every question, a one-to-one BM teacher can test you with new prompts and show how to change the angle without changing the facts.
