Controlling time sequence in a Chinese story

Your reader loses track of when things happen, especially after you add a memory.

A story’s time sequence tells the reader when each event happens. In Chinese the verb does not show tense, so time words do that work.

This lesson is part of narrative composition. It works best after using meaningful detail.

What are the three orders?

Order Chinese term Pattern
Chronological 顺叙 Events in the order they happened
Start at the end 倒叙 A later moment first, then back to the beginning
Memory inside the story 插叙 A brief return to an earlier event, then back

Choose one main order for the story. Use a flashback only for a short memory that explains the present.

Which markers help?

  • Forward: “清晨”, “过了一会儿”, “不久”, “当天晚上”.
  • Backward: “三个月前”, “记得那一年”, “想起去年”.
  • Return: “回过神来”, “现在”, “这时”.

Worked example: starting at the end

“站在领奖台上,我的手还在发抖。

三个月前,我连站上讲台都不敢。那时每次老师点名,我都会低下头,把脸藏在书后面。

回过神来,主持人已经念到了我的名字。”

The first paragraph gives the present moment. “三个月前” marks the step back, and the second paragraph supplies the reason. “回过神来” marks the return. Each shift has a marker, so the reader knows where they are.

The mistake that costs marks

The slip is jumping in time without a marker.

Confusing: “我走进课室。昨天我忘了带书。老师叫我站起来。”

The reader cannot tell if the teacher is speaking today or yesterday.

Clear: “我走进课室,心里还想着昨天忘了带书的事。老师叫我站起来,我这才发现,今天我又忘了。”

Here the memory is brief and is tied to the present by “这才发现”.

Weak Why Better
Memory with no entry marker Reader thinks events are current Start with “三个月前”
Memory with no return marker Reader stays in the past End with “回过神来”
A marker at the start of every sentence Sounds mechanical Use one where time really shifts

Check yourself

Add a leaving marker and a return marker to this passage, keeping the content.

“我坐在候车室里,手里握着车票。爷爷第一次带我坐火车,他把糖放进我的口袋。广播响起,车来了。”

Answer

One version: “我坐在候车室里,手里握着车票。记得七岁那年,爷爷第一次带我坐火车,他把糖放进我的口袋。回过神来,广播已经响起,车来了。”

“记得七岁那年” marks the step back, and “回过神来” marks the return. The memory is now placed in time, and the present sentence “广播已经响起” is clearly the main story again.

What to study next

Finish the set with connecting an ending to the central theme. The Chinese composition structure planner lets you mark each scene with its time, and the mistake log and paper-error review helps you track time-order slips.

Common questions

Why is time order harder in Chinese than in English?

Chinese verbs do not change form for past or present, so time words must carry the order. If you leave out markers such as “昨天” or “三个月前”, the reader cannot tell when an event happens.

What is a flashback in a composition?

It is a short return to an earlier event inside the main story, often called 插叙. You leave the present with a marker, tell the memory briefly, then return with another marker.

Should I start my story at the end?

You can, using 倒叙. Begin with a striking moment, then go back to explain how it happened. Use it only when it adds interest, because a plain time order is easier to control.

How many time markers are enough?

Enough that a reader can place every event. Add one when the scene changes or the time jumps, and avoid starting every sentence with one, which makes the story sound mechanical.

If your stories jump in time and you cannot see why the reader is lost, a teacher in one-to-one Chinese lessons can read your draft aloud and stop where the order becomes unclear.
