SPM Mathematics answering guide

You keep practising, yet the same kinds of mistakes keep appearing in your marked work.

This guide is about how to write answers, not about the paper itself. The paper format, timing, marks and calculator rules are set by the examination authority, so confirm them on the official site before planning.

The authority for SPM is Lembaga Peperiksaan, at lp.moe.gov.my. The page on SPM examination information and where to verify it explains where to look.

What do the command words ask for?

Command word What the marker expects
State The answer, with little or no working
Calculate, find A working route to a value, with units where needed
Show that Every step from the start to the given result, with no gaps
Hence Use the result you have just obtained
Express Rewrite in the form stated
Estimate An approximate value, with the method that produced it
Sketch The shape and the key features, with no need for exact plotting

Read the word before the mathematics. “Hence” in particular tells you the method, because it asks you to use the previous part.

A worked solution with one plausible mistake

Question. Solve the equation x² = 3x.

Plausible mistake. Divide both sides by x to get x = 3. The working looks tidy and the answer is correct, but one solution has disappeared. This would lose the mark for the second solution.

Corrected working.

  1. Move every term to one side: x² − 3x = 0.
  2. Factorise: x(x − 3) = 0.
  3. Each factor can be zero, so x = 0 or x = 3.

Check. Substitute x = 0: 0 = 0. Substitute x = 3: 9 = 9. Both solutions work.

The lesson is that you may only divide by an expression you know is not zero. Factorising keeps every solution.

How should you show method?

Write the rule or formula, the substitution and the simplified result. If the question says “show that”, write one more line than seems necessary.

For multi-part questions, check whether a later part depends on an earlier result. If you are unsure of part (a), still use the given answer to attempt part (b).

How should you use your time?

Time allowed and marks differ between papers, so use the official information to plan.

  • Attempt the parts you can do first, and mark the others to return to.
  • Keep a short list of checks for the end, such as signs, units and rounding.
  • Practise timed sets on original questions, then review where the time went with the timed original practice session builder.

Why should you avoid predicted-question claims?

No one outside the examination authority knows the questions, so claims of predicted or spot questions are unreliable. Why predicted-question claims are unreliable preparation gives the reasoning.

Use the revision plan and the glossary of question words and terms to cover every topic instead.

Where does tuition fit?

A one-to-one teacher can read your written answers, show which lines earn method marks and help you practise the command words on new questions. See online one-to-one Mathematics tuition, and the SPM Mathematics guide for the free topic lessons.

Common questions

Where do I find the current Mathematics paper format?

Check the Lembaga Peperiksaan website at lp.moe.gov.my and ask your school. The number of papers, timing, marks and calculator rules are set by the authority and can change, so this site does not state them. Always use the official source for your exam year.

What is the difference between 'state' and 'calculate'?

'State' asks for an answer with little or no working, such as reading a value from a graph. 'Calculate' asks for a working route to a value, so the marker looks for the method as well as the answer. Writing only a number after 'calculate' risks losing method marks.

How do I earn method marks if my final answer is wrong?

Write each step clearly: the formula, the substitution and the simplification. A marker can credit a correct method even when a later arithmetic slip occurs. A bare wrong answer with no working earns nothing.

Can a teacher tell me what will be in the paper?

No. Nobody outside the examination authority can know the questions. Be careful of any claim of predicted or spot questions. Practising every topic with original questions is the reliable preparation.

If practice alone is not removing the same errors, a one-to-one teacher can read your written working, name the step where the reasoning slips and set new questions to test the fix.
