This page explains how to read and answer Sejarah questions. It does not state the paper structure, time or marks. Those are in the official documents from Lembaga Peperiksaan (lp.moe.gov.my) and Bahagian Pembangunan Kurikulum (bpk.moe.gov.my).
Check the current format there before you plan your revision. The habits below help whatever the format is.
How do you read what a question wants?
Start with the command word, because it sets the shape of the answer.
| Command | What it asks for |
|---|---|
| State, name | A short fact, no explanation |
| Explain | A point with a reason |
| Describe | What happened, in order |
| Compare | Similarities and differences, point by point |
| Evaluate, discuss | Evidence on more than one side, then a judgement |
After the command word, find the topic, the period and any source. The answering historical questions cluster teaches this in detail.
A source-to-explanation example from real history
The source below is a short summary of a real event, written for practice, not a quotation.
Summary: Malaya became independent on 31 August 1957, when the Federal Constitution came into force 1.
Question: explain why 31 August 1957 mattered.
Recall answer: “Malaya became independent in 1957.” It repeats the source and gives no reason.
Evidence-based answer: “The Federal Constitution came into force on 31 August 1957 together with independence. This mattered because Malaya now governed itself under its own written law, so its own government and institutions made the decisions.”
Both answers use the source. Only the second explains why the date mattered, which is what the command word asked for.
What habits protect marks?
- Underline the command word and the topic.
- Write each point as a claim, evidence and a reason.
- Keep the wording neutral and avoid praising or blaming.
- Use dates only where they clarify a sequence.
- Reread the question at the end and check each point against it.
The lesson on using dates only where they clarify a sequence shows how to use dates without turning an answer into a list.
How should you practise?
Practise short explained points every week, and full answers under time. After each attempt, mark your own answer against what the question asked, and log the misses in the mistake log tool.
The timed practice session builder sets up a timed attempt, and the revision guide shows which topics to cover first. If you want a teacher to mark a full answer with you, see online one-to-one SPM Sejarah tuition.
