Prepare learning goals for Tamil tuition

You are thinking about Tamil tuition but cannot say what you want the teacher to work on.

Good learning goals name a skill, show evidence for it and can be checked. Three clear goals give a teacher something to work on from the first lesson.

This lesson closes the cluster on language practice and revision. It draws on your private mistake log and revision sequence.

How do I write a goal?

A useful goal has three parts: the skill, the evidence that it needs work, and a simple check. Write it as a sentence a teacher can act on.

Worked example: from an error list to three goals

An original error list shows these problems in three recent paragraphs.

Evidence Skill Goal
அவர்கள் வந்தான் written three times Verb endings match subject Write ten sentences with plural and singular subjects and get every verb ending right
Reading answers without quotations Evidence in answers Give a point, exact quotation and explanation on three passages
Paragraphs with no connectors Connecting sentences Join four sentence pairs with cause, contrast and sequence words

The first goal can be checked by counting correct endings in ten sentences. The second can be checked by looking for a quotation in each answer. Because each one names a skill, a teacher can begin straight away.

What do I tell the teacher?

In your WhatsApp message about a trial, mention the form, the chapters or skills, the paper you are working toward, and whether you want explanations in English or BM. Add your three goals in one line each.

The one-hour trial class (from RM50) is a real taught lesson. The fee is agreed before the trial. The schedule is agreed between you and the teacher, so note your available days and times too.

The mistake that costs marks

The common slip is a goal such as “improve my Tamil” or “get a good grade”. It names no skill and cannot be checked.

Weak goal Better goal
Improve my Tamil Fix verb endings in writing, checked by ten sentences
Get an A Give quotation plus explanation in every reading answer
Learn everything Write one four-sentence paragraph with two connectors

A second slip is to arrive with goals and no evidence. Bring a recent piece of writing, so the teacher can see the real pattern.

Check yourself

Turn this into a goal: “My Tamil spelling is bad.” Your log shows பலம் written for பழம் and மளை for மழை.

Answer

Skill: distinguishing ல, ள and ழ in common words.

Evidence: பலம் for பழம் and மளை for மழை.

Goal: write five common ல / ள / ழ pairs correctly in sentences, and check the set a week later.

The goal names the skill, cites the evidence and gives a check.

Common questions

Do I need a goal before the trial class?

It helps but is not required. A rough idea, such as my verb endings keep going wrong, gives the teacher a place to start. The teacher can help you sharpen it in the first lesson.

What should I bring to the trial?

A recent piece of your own writing, your mistake log if you keep one, and the passage or question type you find hardest. Real work shows the teacher more than a description.

Who decides the fee and schedule?

The fee is agreed before the trial, and you book only if you are happy with it. After the trial you decide whether the teacher suits you, and you can ask for another teacher if not. Raise your goals and your available times when you agree the schedule.

Can I set a goal like get an A?

Better goals name a skill, for example join two sentences with a cause connector correctly. A grade is an outcome, not a skill, so each lesson aims at one named skill.

If you are unsure which Tamil goal matters most, the one-hour trial class (from RM50) is a real taught lesson where a teacher can look at your work and help you choose the first one.

  • Your first class is a one-hour trial, from RM50. The fee is agreed before you book.
  • Happy with the teacher? Continue with lessons of about 1.5 hours. If not, ask for another teacher.
