Find the main idea in a Tamil passage

You follow each sentence of the passage, yet the question on the main idea still trips you.

The main idea is the one statement that every sentence in the passage supports. A detail supports it, but it does not cover the whole passage.

This lesson is part of reading and evidence in the SPM Bahasa Tamil guide. The next skill is telling a stated detail from an inference.

How do I find the main idea?

Ask what the passage is about, then ask what it says about that topic. Finally, check the statement against every sentence: if one sentence does not fit, the statement is too narrow or wrong.

A useful test is to cross out one detail. If your sentence still stands, it is probably the main idea. If it collapses, you picked a detail.

Worked example: a boy and a garden

Here is an original passage.

In English: Ganesan wakes at six each morning and waters his grandfather’s garden. On school holidays he also pulls weeds.

Last month the tomato plants fruited for the first time, and he gave some to the neighbours.

Step 1: the topic. The topic is Ganesan and the garden.

Step 2: list the details. Watering at six, pulling weeds in holidays, tomatoes fruiting, sharing with neighbours.

Step 3: write a sentence that covers them all. கணேசன் தன் தாத்தாவின் தோட்டத்தை அக்கறையுடன் பராமரிக்கிறான். It means Ganesan looks after his grandfather’s garden with care.

Step 4: test it. Watering and weeding are care, the tomatoes are its result, and sharing follows from that result. Every detail fits.

The mistake that costs marks

The usual slip is picking the most interesting sentence. Here that is the last one: “He gave the tomatoes to the neighbours.”

Candidate Why it fails Verdict
He gave tomatoes to the neighbours. Covers one sentence only Detail
He wakes at six. Covers one sentence only Detail
He looks after the garden with care. Covers all four sentences Main idea

A second slip is writing a label, such as “தோட்டம்” (garden). A label names the topic but does not say anything about it.

Check yourself

Read this original passage and write the main idea in one sentence.

நூலகத்தில் புத்தகங்களை இரவல் வாங்க அட்டை வேண்டும். அட்டையை வைத்திருப்பவர்கள் இரண்டு வாரம் வரை புத்தகத்தை வைத்திருக்கலாம். காலம் தாண்டினால் தாமதக் கட்டணம் செலுத்த வேண்டும்.

Answer

The passage gives the rules for borrowing library books. A good Tamil sentence is: நூலகத்தில் புத்தகங்களை இரவல் வாங்குவதற்கான விதிகள் இவை.

The three details are the card, the two-week limit and the late fee, and each one is a rule. “Late fee” alone is a detail, so it would lose the mark.

What to study next

Move on to distinguishing a stated detail from an inference, then test yourself with the reading and evidence practice set.

Common questions

Is the main idea always the first sentence?

No. In some passages the first sentence introduces the topic, but the main idea can also appear in the last sentence or only be implied. Test any candidate against the rest of the passage.

How is the main idea different from the topic?

The topic is a short label, such as a garden. The main idea is a full statement about it, such as a boy cares for his grandfather's garden. Write a sentence, not a label.

Should I write the main idea in my own words?

Yes, unless the question asks you to quote. Use simple correct Tamil that covers every detail in the passage, rather than copying one line.

How long should a main idea answer be?

One clear sentence is enough. Follow the marks given in the question, and add a brief supporting detail only if the question asks for evidence.

If main idea answers keep landing on a detail, one-to-one Tamil lessons let a teacher read your chosen sentence and show why it is a detail rather than the whole point.
