Reading in SPM Bahasa Tamil rests on four skills that build on each other: finding the main idea, separating stated details from inferences, supporting an inference with evidence, and explaining a word from its context.
This area sits inside the SPM Bahasa Tamil learning guide. The lessons below are original, and you can use them without any enquiry.
In what order do the reading skills connect?
Begin with the main idea, because every later answer has to fit it. Then separate what the passage states from what it only suggests, and learn to quote the words behind a suggestion. Word meaning comes last because it needs the whole sentence, not one isolated word.
- Find the main idea of a short passage.
- Tell a stated detail from an inference.
- Support an inference with exact words.
- Explain a word from its context.
What does the difference look like in a real passage?
Take this original two-line passage: மழை பெய்தது. கண்ணன் குடையை எடுத்துக்கொண்டு பள்ளிக்குச் சென்றான். In English: It rained. Kannan took an umbrella and went to school.
A stated detail is that Kannan took an umbrella. An inference is that he expected more rain, or was protecting himself from it. “He dislikes school” cannot be justified by any word in the passage, so it is a guess and not an inference.
Where should I start?
If you get the right idea but lose marks for the reason, start at lesson 2 or 3. If you misread what the question wants, start at lesson 1 and read the question words before the passage. After any lesson, test yourself with the reading and evidence practice set.
When you move on to writing full answers, continue with reading-response development. If you would like a teacher to go through your own answers, see online one-to-one Tamil tuition.
