A developed reading response has three parts: a point, evidence from the passage, and an explanation that joins them. This area teaches each part, then how to check the whole.
It belongs to the SPM Bahasa Tamil learning guide and builds on the skills in reading and evidence.
How do the lessons connect?
Start by keeping quotation and explanation apart, because mixing them is the main reason a response feels thin. Next compare a short answer with an unsupported one, then handle questions with several parts, and finish with a checklist you can apply to your own writing.
- Separate quotation from explanation.
- Compare concise and unsupported answers.
- Develop an answer to a multi-part question.
- Review a response with a transparent checklist.
What does a quotation and its explanation look like?
Use this original passage: மழை பெய்தது. கண்ணன் குடையை எடுத்துக்கொண்டு பள்ளிக்குச் சென்றான். (It rained. Kannan took an umbrella and went to school.) The question asks what Kannan expected.
The point is that Kannan expected the rain to continue. The evidence is the words “குடையை எடுத்துக்கொண்டு” (taking an umbrella). The explanation is that he would only carry an umbrella if he thought he would need it on the way.
Each part has its own sentence, so the reader can see where your reasoning comes from.
Who should start where?
If your answers are one line long, begin at lesson 1 and practise adding the explanation. If they are long but lose marks, begin at lesson 2 and trim to the words that prove the point. Test the whole route with the reading-response practice set.
