Sentence construction practice

Tamil sentence construction: mixed practice

You know the words, but your Tamil sentences come out loose, long or unclear.

These eight questions are original and ramp from simple to demanding. Write your answer in Tamil first, then open the answer to compare reasoning, not only the final sentence.

The set covers the sentence construction cluster. Questions 1 and 2 are the easiest, and questions 7 and 8 combine skills.

Questions

Question 1. Arrange these words into one correct sentence: மாணவர்கள், நூலகத்தில், புத்தகங்களை, படித்தனர்.

Answer

மாணவர்கள் நூலகத்தில் புத்தகங்களைப் படித்தனர்.

The subject comes first, the place next, the object after it, and the verb last. A ப் joins புத்தகங்களை to படித்தனர், because the verb begins with ப.

Question 2. Write one sentence to say that the bus was late because of a traffic jam.

Answer

போக்குவரத்து நெரிசலால் பேருந்து தாமதமாக வந்தது.

The ending -ஆல் on நெரிசல் carries the cause inside the sentence, so no separate connector word is needed. A sentence with ஏனெனில் would also be acceptable.

Question 3. Join these two sentences with a cause connector: மழை பெய்தது. போட்டி தள்ளிவைக்கப்பட்டது.

Answer

மழை பெய்ததால் போட்டி தள்ளிவைக்கப்பட்டது.

The rain is the cause and the postponement is the result. The ending -தால் on the first verb joins them in a single sentence.

Question 4. Join these with a contrast connector: அவன் கடினமாக உழைத்தான். அவன் தேர்வில் தோல்வியுற்றான்.

Answer

அவன் கடினமாக உழைத்தான்; ஆனால் தேர்வில் தோல்வியுற்றான்.

The word ஆனால் signals that the second idea is the opposite of what the first idea leads you to expect. The repeated அவன் in the second part is dropped because only one person is involved.

Question 5. Turn these three separate actions into one sequence of sentences with signal words: தண்ணீரைக் கொதிக்க வைத்தாள், தேயிலையைச் சேர்த்தாள், பாலைக் கலந்தாள்.

Answer

முதலில் தண்ணீரைக் கொதிக்க வைத்தாள். பிறகு தேயிலையைச் சேர்த்தாள். இறுதியாகப் பாலைக் கலந்தாள்.

The words முதலில், பிறகு and இறுதியாக show the order. Each sentence has a different signal, so the reader never loses the sequence.

Question 6. Join into one sentence without using the word பிறகு: அவள் வீட்டுக்கு வந்தாள். அவள் உணவு சமைத்தாள்.

Answer

அவள் வீட்டுக்கு வந்து உணவு சமைத்தாள்.

The form வந்து links two actions by the same person in order. Only the last verb carries the tense, and the repeated subject is dropped.

Question 7. This paragraph has an unclear pronoun. Rewrite it so the owner is certain: அம்மா பாட்டியிடம் கடைக்குச் செல்லச் சொன்னார். அவர் பையை எடுத்தார்.

Answer

Decide who took the bag. If it was the grandmother: அம்மா பாட்டியிடம் கடைக்குச் செல்லச் சொன்னார். பாட்டி பையை எடுத்தார்.

The pronoun அவர் had two candidates, so it was replaced by the noun. See the lesson on repairing ambiguous reference.

Question 8. Write a short paragraph of three sentences about a school sports day. Include one cause connector, one contrast connector and no unclear pronoun.

Answer

One possible answer: வானம் மேகமூட்டமாக இருந்ததால் விளையாட்டுப் போட்டி தாமதமாகத் தொடங்கியது. ஆனால் மாணவர்களின் உற்சாகம் குறையவில்லை. தலைமை ஆசிரியர் பரிசுகளை வழங்கி அனைவரையும் பாராட்டினார்.

Check three things: the cause is inside the first sentence, ஆனால் opens the contrasting second sentence, and the only subject in the last sentence is named (தலைமை ஆசிரியர்). Any accurate paragraph meeting those three checks is acceptable.

If you got these wrong

Write every slip you found into a mistake log, then retry the set after a few days. To have a teacher read your own sentences, see online one-to-one Tamil tuition.

Common questions

Is there only one correct answer to each question?

More than one sentence can be correct in Tamil, because word order is flexible. The model answers show one good version. Check that yours keeps the stated meaning, ends with the verb, and has no unclear pronoun.

Should I attempt these under time pressure?

First try them without a timer and write full sentences. Once your accuracy is steady, repeat the set with a timer so that clear sentences become a habit at speed.

What if my answer is different from the model?

Compare the meaning, the connector and the verb ending. If all three match the question, your version is probably fine. If you are unsure, note it in your mistake log and ask a teacher.

Can I write my answers in English?

No. Write each answer in Tamil, because the skill being practised is building Tamil sentences. The explanations are in English only to help you check your reasoning.

If the same sentence pattern keeps going wrong, one-to-one Tamil lessons let a teacher check your own sentences and work on that pattern directly.
