If a Form 4 question stops you because it needs something from Form 2, the problem is small and specific, not a sign that you cannot do the subject. Most gaps are two or three skills that were taught once, never revised, and quietly forgotten.
This page shows how to find them and what to do next. It belongs to the students section and pairs with the prerequisite gap finder.
What does this gap look like in real work?
Take this example. A Form 4 student solves this question: find x if 3x − 7 = 2x + 5.
She writes 3x + 2x = 5 + 7, then 5x = 12, so x = 12/5. The correct answer is 12. She moved 2x across the equals sign and forgot that the sign flips.
The textbook chapter is not the issue. The missing idea is a Form 1 rule: do the same thing to both sides. Once she rewrites it as 3x − 2x = 5 + 7, she gets x = 12.
Find the gap in five minutes
Take your last three wrong answers from any subject and ask the same questions for each.
- Which line first went wrong?
- What does that line need me to know?
- Could I do that one skill alone, in a simpler question?
If the answer to question 3 is no, you have found a prerequisite gap. Write it in one phrase, such as “moving terms across an equation” or “converting cm² to m²”.
Which basic skills break Form 4 and Form 5 work?
| Weak skill | Where it breaks SPM answers |
|---|---|
| Fractions and percentages | Probability, Accounting ratios, Economics data |
| Rearranging an equation | Physics formulas, Mathematics algebra |
| Indices and surds | Additional Mathematics from the first chapter |
| Units and conversion | Physics, Chemistry, Science calculations |
| Reading a graph | Physics, Geography, Economics |
You do not need to fix all five. Choose the one that appeared in your wrong answers.
How to repair without falling behind
Repair in short, repeated pieces. Fifteen minutes a day on one skill beats one long weekend session that you never repeat.
Use the algebra step repair trainer for equation gaps, then return to the Form 4 question that started this. If it now works, the repair did its job.
Keep class work going alongside. How to keep up with class while repairing old gaps gives a weekly split that protects both.
Self-check
Solve 5(x − 2) = 3x + 4 without looking at notes.
Answer
Expand first: 5x − 10 = 3x + 4. Then 5x − 3x = 4 + 10, so 2x = 14 and x = 7. Check: 5(7 − 2) = 25 and 3(7) + 4 = 25. If you wrote 5x − 2 at the first step, the gap is expanding brackets.
When paid one-to-one tuition may be worth considering
If you have tried the gap test and still cannot tell which basic is missing, or you find one gap only to discover another behind it, a teacher watching your working can find the chain faster. The teacher starts from what you can already do and builds up.
Tell us the subject, form and chapter when you enquire. The one-hour trial class (from RM50) is a full lesson, so you can see whether the repair approach suits you.
